Whenever you give singers acting roles they bound to suck! and it goes the other way around too. Actors and actresses should just stick to acting and singers should just stick to singing. Of course all of these famous people out there have neither the gift of acting and singing but yet they get paid a baskillion dollars for doing so! lol. But anyh00ps...

shareI don't fully agree with you. At least on the first point. There are some performers that are simply destined to perform, be it on a stage singing or in front of a camera in a movie. The best example I can think of is Jamie Foxx. Friggin' triple threat. He's funny, he can sing, and he's a very talented actor. While most singers are absolutely hysterical in a movie (Eminem, 50 Cent, Cher, Madonna, Iggy Pop, etc.) it doesn't necessarily rule out all musicians as actors.

Well, there are truly talented people who can sing, act, and compose music. Like Kris Kristofferson or Tom Waits. Justin Timberlake, however is just a Michael Jackson wannabe and I hope the failure of this film makes him realize that all he is good for is selling soulless boy band pop songs to 13 year olds.

I thought LL Cool J didn't do that poorly of an acting job. I actually liked his performance second best, after of course, Morgan Freeman. Justin Timberlake shouldn't have been cast, but I still think they could have found someone worse.

Johnny Depp WAS a guitarist before an actor. Though, his band `P' released an album in the early 90s, which was quite good. And surprsingly it's still in print. He also played steel guitar on `Fade in and Out' on Oasis' third album. He's definitely got chops.

Don't forget Will Smith. He started out as a rapper and he's pretty much box office royalty now.
watched this for the first time last night. not really my type of film but i didn't think it was that bad in fact I rather enjoyed it. story was a bit lame, has been done a zillion times before, but it was entertaining nonetheless. I thought for his debut JT did a good job with the role. I thought he was pretty believable throughout. I am a massive fan of JT though so some may say im biased - im not - i am also a massive fan of a lot of other movie stars but will admit when they suck from time to time. This was by no means an oscar worthy performance but was a good first effort.
Ive also seen Alpha Dog which i thought JT was absolutely great in. Haven't seen Black Snake Moan yet so can't judge on that one. And a Michael Jackson wannabe with his music?! Have you even heard his new stuff - you're talking about an album that was out 4 years ago!

ya i actually really liked mos def in 16 blocks, and ocasionally l.l. will suprise you. thats why i don't keep sterotypes about musicians, but i mean really its jt first big acting break... and it doesn't make to theaters.. he can't blame the cast i mean morgan freeman and kevin spacey are some of the best actors you could possibly find... in the end its just sad
shareReally, it's nothing more than a popcorn movie. If one goes into watching it, with that frame of mind, it's fun. Just from the LOOKS of it, I knew trying to take it seriously wouldn't work, before I even started.
Besides, it's worth it alone for watching Morgan Freeman dance around in his bathrobe along to `Time Has Come Today' by the Chambers Brothers. I couldn't help but laugh my ass off at that.

I happen to like some singer/actor duel career people. LL Cool J for one (Deliver Us from Eva "House" episode, Mindhunters to name 3), Alanis (Dogma & way back in the 80's on Canadian tv "You Can't Do That On Television"), Hillary Duff-though more out of high school roles is what she needs; Johnny Depp, Kevin Bacon, Bette Midler, Kylie Minogue, Mos Def, Ludicris, Mark Wahlberg far better actor/singer than his New Kid bro Donnie has ever been; even George Clooney sang for O, Brother where Art Thou and was actually good ;)...
As for models-Charlize, Cameron, Andie Mcdowell, Natasha Henstridge are all great actors.
Actually, Clooney lip-synced "I Am A Man of Constant Sorrow." Dan Tyminski's the real man behind the voice. Apparently, Clooney did such a good job lip-syncing that people have even studied the film to disprove the credits. Poor Dan, can't properly lay claim to his own song.
It's not entirely implausible for artists to jump between fields of entertainment. I mean, Broadway certainly thrives on its proteges' talents as actors, singers, and dancers. Why should Hollywood be any different?
Although I have to agree, some people are in pure denial and need to be told their limitations because they clearly can't grasp the concept of being out of their league. Like, I can't believe it took Madonna this long to officially abandon her so-called film career, as if she had one to dump in the first place (I liked her in A League Of Their Own, though. But, come to think of it, she wasn't really acting; she wasn't really stretching far from home, if you catch my drift).

I don't like timberlake's music and i don't listen to it so when a friend recommended this movie i was afraid his acting would suck...surpisingly he wasn't that bad. one or two better movies and he will be a decent actor if he puts his mind to it
but this movie sucked because of its apalling script. even Scorcese couldn't have saved it the way it was written. the only movie that comes to my mind with equal crappy script and waste of talent is Freedomland

I give J. T. credit for accepting the role and making a go of it. I think Timberlake has potential as an actor... potential he has yet to tap.
The real culprit of role wrecking in "Edison" was Dylan McDermott. Thankfully, his character was killed by his own father. John Heard's performance was particularly flat, and Kevin Spacey really couldn't do much more than he did with the role he was given. Morgan Freeman was the highlight of the movie. His typically smart, easy-going style lends a comfortable sense of edginess to an otherwise iffy movie.
