What were the vampires actually doing for most of the time?

I mean, the time that the humans weren't making themselves easy targets. Did they not realise where the humans were hiding? Clearly it didn't occur to them to make a methodical sweep of the town. Is there a deleted scene explaining that these days were spent styling their hair, ironing their clothes and practicing their scary growls? Could they not also have spent an occasional 20 seconds wiping the blood from their *beep* mouths?

I thought this was kinda weak in the story, too. For example, all the time the humans were hiding, they must have been eating and drinking. If you do those two things, you will create waste, urine and feces. They would've had to gotten rid of their waste from the attic or at least stored it somewhere, but the point is, it would created a stench. Since these vampires apparently possessed keen scent (Hartnett comments he can smell their blood very shortly after he infects himself), I would imagine the vamps would've picked up on the waste.

Any waste would have been quickly frozen in that environment and the stench would have been contained because no further decay would have occurred.

We have no idea of the vampires' sense of smell beyond blood. Why would they be sensitive to the smell of human feces any more than we are sensitive to the smell of blood?

Not in the movie, but in the graphic novel they explained that the freezing weather impaired their sense of smell. Wish they had incorporated this into the film.

They were shown searching a bit, its possible they doubted anyone had the provisions or whatever to quietly sit in an attic for 30 days..

Yeah this movie is retarded and overrated.
There are about 100 houses. If they send 1 vampire for 10 minutes per house to search and kill, they could've scanned every house in a couple of days.

This is the main problem I had with this movie that made me dislike it in the end. Smell or no smell, they had 30 days to check 150-something houses. If they spent 2 hours checking each house (which is very generous, because finding a bunch of people on one floor of a house would probably only take way less time). That's 12 houses a day, which is plenty of time to find them. If the vampires need to sleep, then make it 1 hour per house, which is still very generous.

I can find my cat in my house in the dark within 20 minutes. I'm giving them over double that time for possibly being unfamiliar with the house. But then again, humans are way bigger than a house cat and there are more of them.

Stupid plot hole. Rant over.

there were more than 100 houses. Barrow alaska has a population of 4,212
there is no way that many people could fit into 100 houses lets say each house is a 5 bedroom house(i doubt it) that would still be over 800 homes to search

I know the real Barrow, has a higher population, but I'm pretty sure in the movie they say the population is only 500, with most going away and leaving only about 150 during the darkness.

Even with the real population, and this band of vampires supposedly being around for a long time, they should absolutely be able to do a sweep of every house in the time allotted.

The Barrow population in the movie is much, much lower. It shows the population on the sign in the beginning (five hundred and something I think). Billy changes it to one hundred and something for the month.

I just re-watched on Netflix. Yes, you are right. Plus there's a drone shot of the entire town at the beginning of the movie. It's spread out a bit, but yeah, there aren't that many homes.

This movie might have worked better if it took place over a few days instead, but then it wouldn't have that bad-ass sounding title.

The real Barrow looks nothing like the town shown in the film. It's actually quite large with a population over 2000. This was simplified for the movie. Also the pipeline doesn't go through the town. And it does not shut down for the darkness time.

They were busy rehearsing their growls and learning that shitty language of theirs; gotta take a lot of time I guess.
