The Dutch praise their own no matter what.

I've lived in The Netherlands/Holland for 24 years now. Born and raised here.
And if I have learned anything it is that my fellow Dutchies suck at rating their own worthless products.

Every single Dutch film that comes out is hailed with praise and glory, just because it is Dutch. Films like Zwartboek, Volle Maan, Wit Licht are all praised to the heavens when any objective viewer will immediately recognize them as utter crap. It sickens me to hear people talk about those flicks as if they were masterpieces.

And believe me, it doesn't stop there. You should listen to a couple of random tracks of praised music artists like Frans Bauer, Jan Smit, De Toppers etc.
Then you will know why we smoke so much weed...

Zwartboek, like any other Dutch film, is heavily overrated and should have a 3.2 instead of a 8.0. The number is only made up of Dutch egos without taste.
"Look world, we have more to offer than hookers and weed."

No we don't.

I live in Spain / Catalonia for 28 years but I am a born Dutchman. By pure coincidence I saw Paul Verhoeven's masterpiece on the Spanish TV in the original language.

Your need to insult my native country must be a kind of severe sickness. My Spanish/Catalan wife did not want to see the film. She has seen enough warmovies and enough details of a stupid war.
Her father was a Republican soldier who survived the Spanish Civil War (1936-1939) and after that the horrible concentration camps in the South of France. He was an intelligent man and I could cope with him very well.

An article with your excuses for such a way of giving you opinion about the country you live in might be welcomed...or completely rejected.

'Done is done' ('Gedane zaken nemen geen keer') is a typical Dutch expression.
That includes your set of shameful lines

Have you ever stood still and thought about the fact that not everyone shares the opinion? I hate most Dutch films, but I recognize a good one and this is a good one.
Maybe our music is overrated. But maybe that's our nature? We don't need any foreigner thinking our music is awesome but I sure as hell don't think most foreigners could appreciate it even if they wanted to.
That's not important, what's important is that WE (the real Dutchies) like it.

Same for films. Most Dutch films aren't even released in other countries. Yet Zwartboek got pretty good comments from all around the world.
This topic is quite pathetic, really.

Also don't appreciate the *beep* you're infecting your own topic with. Films like Volle Maan are only liked by 13 year old girls and you know it if you don't live in a cave.

reply

LOL what the hell are you talking about. This movie has got better ratings from US voters than non US voters (trust me, most of them are Dutch)

reply

This is a competent film, by no means brilliant, but certainly nothing to be ashamed of either. The Dutch should be rightly proud of it. In fact, I will note that it didn't hesitate to present the Dutch as vicious and boorish in their treatment of alleged collaborators after WWII, and of course the primary villain was Dutch. The only nationality which looked good in it were Canadians. So I don't think there's any evidence here of any kind of Dutch egomania.

I am Finnish. I just loved it, as well as most of Verhoevens work

reply

You really believe that, Stickatheist?

I'm Dutch myself and these are my opinions:
I think Zwartboek was great, and I would have also enjoyed it if it wasn't a Dutch production. I haven't seen Volle Maan, but I think Wit Licht was a bad movie. I think the african actors in that movie were better than the Dutch actors.

Frans Bauer, Jan Smit, De Toppers.... Not a single person I know (family and friends for example) likes those singers, neither do I.

''Then you will know why we smoke so muh weed'' As if every Dutch person smokes weed. That's just a really stupid stereotype.

I live in holland myself, and as a matter of fact i dislike dutch movies. I prefer english over dutch.

reply

I disagree in the case of Zwartboek, I loved this movie. I don't like most other Dutch movies though, and much prefer English (spoken) films, mostly because of their less theatrical and more believable acting. And I am Dutch.

reply

Absolutely true.

reply

This is *beep* I'm dutch and a lot of people here don't even like or watch dutch movies. We don't have any great actors (maybe Jeroen Krabbe and Rutger Hauer only) and no great movies, in my opinion.

reply

Funny how all these Dutch people show up agreeing with you. That just discredits everything you said. Just because you don't like this movie or Dutch music doesn't mean that others that do like it have some ulterior motive for liking it. You don't give a single argument on why you think that Dutch people praise their own no matter what. What makes you any different? How did you escape from this "Dutch" disease living in The Netherlands all your life?
