But what else would you expect from a video horror game.
Visuals were great. Creepy. Started out top notch. Divulged into a ghost town story that's not really a ghost town at all. Since people live there. Or is it supposed to be hell? Why are the mother and daughter in hell exactly?
Just silly junk about religion and witches and silly nonsense.
But at least it looked cool.

Rewatched it recently and holds up in a lot of ways as far as style and vfx go. Not a perfect film by any stretch but one of the stronger based on a video game films.
They should have gone the way of the graphic novels and made the story a spin off instead of a bastard version of the SH1 plot. I recall the original outline I read of the film didnt have Alessa or those elements and was about a mother getting stuck in Silent Hill while looking for a faith healer for her terminally ill child. Would have been interesting and given the filmmakers a wider canvas to tell a story instead of trying to hit the games beats with their own original content such as the Da Silva family.
Every single version of the script heavily featured Alessa.

The movie either needed to stay exactly with the game's story OR use an original story.
What we got was an altered version of Silent Hill 1 which makes it probably the worse route they could have taken. Changing Harry Mason into Rose was silly. Inserting elements of Silent Hill 2 into the movie for cheap money grabbing reasons was silly.
Doubt it. If we frown on innovation and ambition then we couldn't have Silent Hill. For example, PH may be slightly out of place in this story. But they had to sell the producers on the idea that they would get money printing franchise ala Resident Evil, and that means you put the fan favorites in the first installment.
And I was a vocal critic on Gans/Avary imposing their own story onto the SH1 plot, I just wouldn't want to be without the 1SH film that we got.
Just seen the movie for the first time, and yes, it was rotten.
