I have to agree with pheonixmorgan. I actually thought this was pretty goddamn funny - galaxy quest for the current disney-age crowd. For the record, I was one of those that actually saw Galaxy Quest in theatres the day it opened. (It didn't gain any geek cred until five years later when some genius started using it as an example in screenwriting books and it finally started playing on cable.)
I started crying it was so funny. Maybe in a "so bad its funny" way, but I'm pretty sure it was intentional. I mean, no one's dumb enough to actually believe the world needs another vague child superhero movie - even movie execs. (I blame the truly dumb marketing execs for not marketing the film properly.)
There's some exposition by Chevy Chase that makes this really obvious - the whole "well, we're gonna use the kids to distract him, then throw a net. If only zoom had his powers we could create a vortex to reverse him from evil to good. Oh well" (yeah, paraphrase.)
I also love the way they simply ignore plot holes at the same time as delivering lots of exposition. That takes balls.
I'll admit that this stuff is subtle. Except for the bunny. That's goddamn comedy gold. I have no idea how they managed to make that adorable little girl so hilarious simply by the fact of her adorable-ness.
Honestly, I heard the audience laughing alot. More than 90% of this year's comedies so far. I can't wait until this movie shows up on cable and my opinion suddenly becomes really popular.
