Boring, unfunny and very overrated

The movie just doesn't take you anywhere at all. Paris is a city with so many amazing sights, pity the movie is stuck in a tight kitchen the whole time. It gives off the impression it needs major fleshing out, like it's an animation prototype or something. There's just nothing to it. The only character that caught my eye was the food critic, the rest are too realistic. I can't think of a single time I was close to laughing. A pleasant movie to watch, but after seeing what Pixar can do, I was disappointed. It just seems like a film can do well simply because it's made by someone who's produced masterpieces, not because of its actual experience.

reply

there were some scenes outside the kitchen. were you in the bathroom when they occurred? the boat jumping chase scene, the motorcycle scene, the parts in the beginning with the old lady.... I wasn't disappointed, since you were that's unfortunate, but I don't see how a movie revolving around a mouse as a chef could be "too realistic" or how the actual experience wasn't enjoyable. it was incredibly enjoyable! at least for me*

reply

I agree with you,I remember watching it I was sooo board I wanted to kill my younger brother
And I can't beleave it won an oscar

reply

i felt the same way... eventually

this movies value diminished with each repeated viewing, its average, nothing spectacular

reply

Me fail english, that's unpossible!

reply

This movie was average.

reply

wow, you guys are hard to please just like that food critic eh?

and what's so "too realistic" about rats become chefs and chef assistants? or how some rat can control a human body just by yanking human hair? talking rats? or even the way the characters look!?

I've seen more "too realistic" 3D animated films than this. Animatrix, Final Fantasy: The Spirits Within, and Final Fantasy VII: Advent Children, are all more realistic than Ratatoullie.

Personally, I was revolted by this movie. First there were the hundreds of rats in that old lady's attic, and then Remy climbs out of the sewer and directly into the kitchen, runs through the entire room, crawls inside the pots and pans they're about to cook in, climbs up the ladles, throws ingredients into the soup and rolls around in the roast/vegetable dish they put in the oven. And that's just the first 25 minutes. It got worse from there. Everybody I saw the movie with was utterly disgusted, we couldn't get into it at all. It was sickening.

reply

Yes, indeed. I always make my servants sterilize their hands before bringing me suffer.

It's a fu cking movie. Ever heard of escapism? If not, you should probably disown your television equipment and just not watch movies altogether.

ROTFL

Please, princess, get a grip on your fobias.
You cannot get food poisoning if you're a cartoon figure. Yes, that means you.
Besides, Remy is a very cleanly rat.

I found this movie boring, unfunny, and very overrated, too, but for different reasons.

Kitchens and food are very important and overlooked sites of Paris. So I found the setting refreshing, the typical sites of Paris have been done before.

The animation did bother me, it was too stylized. I'm not a fan of overt color schemes, bendy people, and the typical exaggerated physical features.

The food critic was the only character I liked, too. He had the best lines and the best style. I'm not sure I'd call any of the other characters "too realistic", to me they were just trite stock characters. And I found them all really annoying and unable to relate to or even respect.

There weren't a lot of funny bits. There weren't a lot of "aww" bits. There were a lot of "Oh god :|" moments, though, and "..." moments. The best part, I thought was the critic's review.

And I agree with your last statement entierly. They could, and have, done much better. I really don't get why all the critics raved about this one.

reply

it's true. it's awful. it's long, boring and i couldn't tell you what the point was. i still don't understand the english critic, the stereotypically terrible french accents and the american sound main character. why couldn't everyone just speak in an american accent and stop the madness?! it didn't embrace being set in paris; it could have been anywhere. and i agree with a pp who said it grossed them out to have rats running around a kitchen. that was sick.

a side issue i have...could someone tell me why the lead character in pixar movies are boys or men and when they have a love interest i.e. collette or eva in wall*e are nasty and then after softening, fall in love. nice role model for girls. thanks.

reply

Agreed. I watched this with my girl friend. I fell asleep and told her i hated it. She says obviously, cause you fell asleep ! So we watch again after a week or so, and I conclude, it sucks.

There is absolutely nothing original in this animation. Really, nothing. If you've seen many animations you'd feel same. Only people with low knowledge of films will enjoy this.

i find this film to be one of the greatest Pixar has ever done! it had a heart-warming story and phenomenal voice acting. i can honestly say i love this film and could watch it over and over again.

"Only people with low knowledge of films will enjoy this."

wow indeed mindy....

apparently ratatouille won an academy award...hmmmmm

i guess that means everyone at the academy has a low knowledge of films as well huh?

dumbass...

reply

oh my god are u joking??!! i luv this movie...i was in love with it from the start to the end...can watch it any number of times..!!

"If you've seen many animations you'd feel same. Only people with low knowledge of films will enjoy this. "

HAHAHAH...wow. So tell me, what animations do you rank higher than ratatouille?

reply

Finding Nemo
The Incredibles
Shrek (all of them better than Ratatouille) - I could go on

but I have to admit I just hated Ratatouille. Yet I so wanted to like it because I loved Brad Bird's Incredibles (espicially his portrayal of Edna in it). Maybe I went with expectations too high - as many supporters of Ratatouille have said it wasn't meant to be a comedy. It certainly wasn't for me - it was boring and disappointing (slapstick type humour doesn't do it for me, eg hair pulling rat guiding human, duh)

reply

Really? I hated all of those films, with the exception of 'The Incredibles' which I thought was "alright".

Really, the Shrek films aren't very good though. Not a touch on this.

18 seems a little young to be mayor. What were you, like, 12?

reply

Also in my opinion this movie is highly overrated, as most of Pixar movies, if not all. Finding Nemo is the only exception in the Pixar movie which i did like to see.

Don'tget me wrong, the movies are well animated. But I think the focus is way to much on animations. It is the same when i read the comment, everybody is talking about the animations. BUt keeep in mind that animations are just tools to tell a story. The story in Ratatouille is very superficial. It seems the trend (The incredibles, Wall-E, Toy Story 1 & 2, Shrek) like in most comedies.

I'm a real film addict, and book addict (Just story addict), and I can tell you the characters and story of Ratatouille never grabbed me during the film. Crown jewels like Lion King and Mulan are the latest proof of Disney's ability to make good animated movies. I am afraid, Disney interprented the succes of LIon King wrongly by thinking too much abou the ridiculous humour of Timon and Pumbaa while just the headline story and the atmospere made the film that beautiful.

Now we, as audience, are left alone with only the Timon & Pumbaa humour in the animated american movies. At least outside of the united states still, beautiful animated movies are made. For example "The triplets of belleville"

reply

Overrated..... Hmmmm.... I don't understand how if someone gives there honest opinion you can tell them they are wrong? If someone thinks the animation "sucks” You must have watched a very different movie than I watched. On a more personal note, I am a working Sous Chef. There are so many details that to the novice would probably go un-noticed; they really did their homework on this one. As far as the "rat in the kitchen” I can dig the irony. I remember in the movie the Chef rides a scooter when his feet clearly would never reach the ground, that doesn't however make me feel unsafe whenever I drive to work. Just try and suspend disbelief and enjoy the movie. With that being said, I enjoyed it immensely!!

reply

Lion King - a crown jewel?
Are you f*ing kidding me?
God, I hated that movie so much!!! It was treacly crap.
Ratatouille may not have been my favorite Pixar movie, but it was still head and shoulders above that total waste of time and money "Lion King".

reply

An animated movie, the same as live action, doesnt neccecarily have to be funny.

reply

No it doesn't have to be funny but it should be entertaining - in some way. To many of us, this one wasn't, in any way. And in fact, it was downright annoying and frustrating to those of us who expected so much more. I lie - I did enjoy the part where the critic appeared - the one and only character with any charisma!

reply

I found Ratatoulli easy to admire, but much harder to actually enjoy. It's visually beautiful and, for a G-rated family film, very sophisticated. But I found the story dull and the characters unlikeable and unrelatable. I love Pixar and admire that they're brave enough to make a film like Ratatoulli, but it just wasn't for me. The only part that really moved me was Anton's turnaround at the end, it was very touching. One of my closest friends is a pastry chef who happens to love Paris and she adored this movie, so it does have an audience at least. I wouldn't say Ratatoulli is overrated, it has it's merits. I just don't think those merits include story and character.

reply

I feel the same way! overrated! nothing special... only an animation with a storyline.... wow... big deal!
It should receive awards for the picture quality.... but #144 in History!? COME ON!!!! 8.2 is waaaay too much! I rated it 6/10.
