shareThe ending in the original movie made with Glenn Ford in 1957 and the novel had a different ending.
This recent movie is a great western. The ending made perfect sense. It could go either way. And like the earlier poster’s comment - there’s a connection with Bale, his son, and Crowe. But I don’t think you are asking that.
You are asking: Why was “Crowe playing along with it” - that’s in all the versions of this story. He knew he could break out of jail and he knew that he had to go to jail so that Bale could get the reward.
how can it make perfect sense? crowe was a battle hardened man. if he did want to help bale ok, but he did it in such a way that puts him in grave danger. he was running along with his hands tied. did he have a death wish? why would he give up his life for some man he just met? at least have him be unshackled and with a gun in his hand. so we can say he's so cocksure of his gun fighting abilities that he has no problem helping bale because they couldnt get him anyway. him playing the prisoner doesn't make sense. it was written such to increase the dramatic nature of the event but it's irrational.
shareHe was tired of having nothing to show for but being an asshole.
shareI don’t know what to tell you. The story was written in 1953 by Elmore Leonard. The 1957 movie does the same. Wade wants to help Dan get the reward. He’s escaped Yuma jail before and knows he can do it again. He owes Dan a favor. He also knew Charlie Prince and the gang would protect him and that Prince would do anything for him. In the book and first movie, Dan does not die. In the Crowe movie, Dan is killed and Wade kills Prince. If there was anybody in grave danger, it was Dan.
