Everyone has their favorites, but it's right up there for me...

#1 The Spy Who Loved Me
#2 Casino Royale
#3 The World is Not Enough
#4 Goldfinger
#5 Goldeneye

The World is Not Enough is one of my favorite films as a kiddo i love that one!

There are dozens of us!

Dr. No is my favorite followed by From Russia With Love and Gold Finger. I would rate all of the Sean Connery ones before this one. This was a great Bond movie tho. definitely towards the stop percentage of films

reply

Hell no! It's the WORST ever. With the WORST ever Bond and the WORST ever producer.

This movie killed the franchise.

reply

I wouldn't say Casino Royale "killed the franchise". I actually enjoyed it since it was the only remaining novel title taken to full length (we don't count the 60s version LOL) and at least reminded me of the book. However, I think the Daniel Craig series went downhill rapidly and dragged Casino Royale right with it. I rewatch earlier Bond films somewhat regularly, but the Craig films simply don't draw me to repeat viewings.

I really had no interest in the last one, but eventually steeled myself and watched it "out of duty". I can't even call its name, which is remarkable for someone who's been a fan of the series since the late 60s. I was too young to see the first few films in the theater. I think the first one I actually saw in the theater--and not when it made it to TV--was Live and Let Die. I was working as a bag boy and had my own money and transportation, so I could buy my own movie tickets by then. :-)

Just as "something fun to have on" I have a sneaky fondness for Diamonds are Forever, though I'd never rank it among the very best. I prefer the movies that are "pure spy" stories or close to it. The more action junkie they get, the less interest I have in watching again.

Action Junkie writing is lazy writing. They did the same thing to the Mission Impossible series, which I quickly lost interest in. None of the MI movies are close to as good as even middle of the road episodes of the original TV series.

Top 5

Casino Royale
Goldfinger
On Her Majesty's Secret Service
The Spy Who Loved Me
Thunderball (some people hate the underwater sequences but I love them).

reply

Dr. No is not on there. The first one. But the one that is rated the highest in general has always been From Russia with Love.

Thunderball and Never Say Never Again are the same movie.

reply

"The one that is rated the highest in general has always been From Russia With Love"

Based on what exactly? FRWL has always been considered one of the best, even Connery liked it best, I think Daniel Craig even said it was his favourite but it's still just opinions not facts. It's not rated the highest on movie sites.

"Thunderball and Never Say Never Again are the same movie"

Except Thunderball was actually good.

From Russia With Love is not my favorite; it seems to be with others. I didn’t like the actress. For me. Casino Royale and Dr. No. Un Certain Regard for Skyfall for it being an excellent non-Ian Fleming. I liked Ola Rapace a lot. I hated Spectre and Quatum Solace. I was not a fan of Madeleine. They had zero chemistry.

Bond actors Moore and Pierce had at least one good one (Spy Who Loved Me) (Golden Eye) or two. You have one listed it. I thought the best thing of Thunderball was Domino and the underwater. I tried but I couldn’t get into Her Majesty’s Secret Service but I liked the book. Goldfinger had the best song, villain, and best girl for Sean - Shirley Eaton.

It'd make my top 5. The only Craig Bond to do so.

reply

No, not at all. But, it's easily the best of the Craig Bond films. "Goldeneye" was easily the best of the Brosnan Bond films.

So, you have two "Best Bonds" across those nine films. I still think the Sean Connery Bond films are the best. Not just because of Connery, but because the inspiration was at the highest level back then.

"Goldfinger"
"From Russia With Love"
"You Only Live Twice"

are my favorites from his time.

These films all blur together for me, with a few notable exceptions. Also, it's interesting how highly ranked On Her Majesty's Secret Service is. That film long had the reputation of being the undisputed worst Bond movie of all time, but opinions have clearly changed over time.

Were I ranking them, I'd put Goldfinger, From Russia With Love, Casino Royale, Dr. No, and Thunderball at top in some order or other, and then group pretty much everything else together as one. If I rewatched, or in some cases watched for the first time, these films I could probably offer more, but for the most part they feel like the same movie over and over.

Hindsight has been good to On Her Majesty's Secret Service. I'd probably find room for it in my top 10 or top 5. The problem with it is that Lazenby just isn't very good as Bond. I'll take just about any other performer. He's okay, but he just doesn't have the charisma or presence that basically any of the others do. As a film - evaluating the story and script, the side characters, etc. - it's pretty top-grade.

I'm a From Russia with Love guy myself. That's my number one for sure. Connery nails it and it's a near perfect spy movie.
