ok this sounds really lame, but this movie really freaked me out. i have NEVER been scared watching a movie, but that kid under the bed and those monster things really bothered me. the movie was ok, but visually this scared the $#!* out of me. i bought it on dvd after renting it, and cant bring myself to watch it again. yes, yes- tease me if you must for being such a chicken, but did anyone else find this VISUALLY terrifying?

Blair Witch was actually very creepy! But The Exorcist and 28 Days Later had little to no effect on me I must say. The Exorcist had an excellent story, but the possession scenes were just ridiculously over-the-top. The sequel, Exorcist: Legion, did creep me out quite a bit tho!
If you want to see where Blair Witch got it's idea, check out the 70's Italian film Cannibal Holocaust.
And If you want to see a demonic-possession film done right, see the new German film Requiem. Although not much time is spent on the actual "possession" it's still a marvelous film, if not necessarily horror. :)

I personally loved this movie... it was slow at times yes... but a very well done indie horror flick. I would much rather watch this then another horrible hollywood horror remake any day!

not well acted and the audio wasn't great. by the time i could hear what the charaters were saying, i realised the dialogue wasn't worth listening to
a few too many jump-scares. the black guy dossolving into smoke didn't make much sense ...but GREAT GORE! lots of good old fashion latex, PIG GUTS and BUCKETS O' BLOOD!!!

I agree with you.I didn't find Blair Witch scary at all,,28 days later didn't scare me either, but this "Dead Birds" is the first movie in a long time that really was creeping me out.I have seen many may sci fi / horror movies(I am over 50) that are suppose to scare you but not many did for me.Most of them only wanted to make me gag and or throw up.I do not find over the top gore scary at all.I do not mind it being realistic,showing blood,etc,etc when called for,like the shootings,,of course blood is going to splatter all over when a person has been shot.But there are limits in my mind in what is just to much and over the top.Actually I find noise,thunderstorms,shadows and creeking,banging doors,etc really what frightens me the most next is a scary frightning face popping out of no where and coming right at you.

The Exorcist, the original Shining, Pet Sematary, The Descent, and even the Grudge were spooky.

I haven't seen Dead Birds yet, but from what I've read here and the pictures that are on the back cover, I can say that it'll creep me out. But in all honesty, The Exorcist was so lame and way over the top. I saw that movie on the Space channel, where they showed the "never-before-seen-footage" and I couldn't stop but laughing my ass off at how ridiculous it was. Don't get me wrong, I love movies from that time period such as Alien, The Texas Chainsaw Massacre, etc, but this one was just plain bad. I have heard nothing but crappy reviews of The Blair Witch Project and its sequel, so I'm not even going to debat that, but I will debat 28 Days Later. Now that movie had some good things on there, but overall it was not scary. I did not feel or give a crap about any of the characters, well except for Brendan Gleesson's role, but that's about it. I mean this movie could have been a whole lot more. But then again everyone has their own opinion on different movies, and that was mine.
P.S. You shouldn't be mean to others who obviously have a different view on a movie than you. You could have just simply said that no you did not like this movie and state which ones you tought were scary to YOU without namecalling.

Why do people rave about Blairwitch being scary? I laughed at most of it and the end was just stupid. Twenty eight days later was pretty good on first viewing. Exorcist...borrrring.

Only a lobotomized chimp with a joint in its mouth could watch this film’s demons explode onto the screen and then write a post saying, "the acting was poor, it was boring, etc. Nevertheless, a few pothead chimps did watch this film and type such nonsense, despite lacking frontal lobes. Whom are these idiots trying to impress? A little over 2,000 people actually voted on this movie, and only about 11 of them actually posted a message on this board. No one stood back in awe at Ohiowatha's defiant "Do you live in a box under your parents' stairs? This was incredibly boring" statement. Are you serious? Did a real live girl actually give you her phone number after she saw how brave you are, watching Dead Birds all by yourself in your parent's basement? Go back to a Star Trek convention. Sorry to beat up on you Ohiowatha, but I saw Blair Witch when I was 14, and I will never see it again, because it was so damn BORING. However, 28 Days Later and The Exorcist are great movies; they're entertaining, but definitely NOT SCARY.
In short, yes, Dead Birds was the first movie that actually scared me. I admit it; it scared the hell out of me, because I'm a normal person who happens to enjoy horror movies. Only people like Ted Bundy and the occasional lobotomized, pothead chimp could watch this movie and say, "Acting bad, it totally boring." Dead Birds should have a much higher rating than 5.6, but oh well.
When i posted this, i was really hoping someone would agree with me that this film also gave them a scare. That kid under the bed actually caused me to jump, and for something that sounded like a yell escape from my mouth- something that has NEVER happened before in all my years of watching horror movies. Those eyes and mouth... eek!!
For Ohiowatha's comments, i know that this movie couldnt possibly be as scary for you as people running through woods, screaming with a video camera.
All the Blair Witch Project did for me was give me motion sickness and almost put me to sleep.
I agree with greatname8697 (great name by the way :P) that 28 Days Later and The Exorcist were good, but i cant recall a single moment when i actually felt scared.
When i showed Dead Birds to a friend of mine (we didnt exactly watch it together, my head was buried in a cushion for a large chunk of the movie, not wanting to see that freaky kid or any of those creepy creatures) he laughed at me, unable to believe that i could be scared of something so lame. Another friend said it was so boring she couldnt sit through it.
Well i feel a whole lot better now that iv read these posts, and know that not only did people find this movie quite good, but that it scared the crap out of a few others too.

I think the reason why this movie was so scary, was because as horror movie lovers, we know when to expect something to jump out and scare us, or for something sudden to happen. there are parts in this film when you think 'ok somethings about to jump out and get that guy...now!'.... and nothing happens, and your like 'oh...ok.' then, same thing again-'scary thing about to happen NOW!'... and once again it doesnt. so when it finally does happen (creepy kid under bed) you almost crap yourself. i think this was a very clever and almost deceptive trick used by the makers of this film. setting the scene and music for a predictable scary scene, then not delivering. comes as much more of a shock when it finally does happen.

shareMm hmm, I'm with you. I watched this flick through my fingers (or through a blanket) half the time, it was that creepy. Very well-done on the whole "what's around the corner" business -- a lot of times that falls flat. I gave it an 8/10 simply because it did everything a horror movie should! I also didn't find there to be any mystery as to what was going on... understood what the owner of the farm did and how everyone became possessed -- and I thought the twist at the end was good, mild and easily understood. Let me tell you, I'd seen 1408 the day before and was so, so disappointed... I was so happy to be as scared as I was by Dead Birds!

They also went into it expecting more "slash-n- dash" and less emotional suspense. If you're alone, in the dark and looking for a CREEPY, slow paced movie that pulls you in so slowly that you can't even tell when it happened, then "Dead Birds" is for you. If you want a rip-off of "Scream" or "Halloween" and need to see tons of action, blood and heroine-chses, then stay away form this movie.

Yeah I agree, as I get older I find gory slasher teenager movies really boring, but respond more to creepy, eerie, atmospheric movies. Dead Birds is one of the creepiest movies I've seen for ages, totally underrated, and that flashback scene with the dead mother turning within one frame into the demon is whoooaaa the scariest thing I have seen for years and years. Exorcist 3: Legion is also a damn fine creepy film. And that underrated submarine film, Below, has some seriously spooky moments in it too.

there is more to scary than gore blood guts and jumps, this film actually did give me the creeps.
Suspense plays a major part in the horror element in this film, Because you know something is wrong and is gonna happen, like that monster in the edge of your vision.
the main reason people get so bored with it is because theres not blood guts etc every couple of minutes and ghouls and goblins screaming in between.
Good film and execution coulda done more if it had a bigger budget.
Fear is the mind killer, i thought it was TV.
It's hard to be scared when there are no rules, no logic, and you really don't care about any of the characters.
