why was George's character so mean?

I think he had trouble fitting in and making friends because of his learning difficulties he talked about and it was said he had been held back a few years at school which can't have been easy on him, he also seemed to try and impress the older kids by picking on the kids his own age which backfired when they turned on him.

It's a shame more wasn't said about his mental health issues!

Well he was fat, dyslexic, held back and he didn't really appear to have a father figure. So yeah, he probably had some issues. My guess is he used to be bullied but turned into one himself as a defense mechanism.

I think it's a mixture of things.. He had mental issues which obviously meant he didn't know how to interact with other people, we can see that by him blurting out about Martys dad.. Lack of thought getting him into trouble. Also, being held back, he could probably exert some control over the younger kids whilst trying to retain/gain some respect from the older kids. It's not an excuse, because I'm sure Sam and the other kids have their own issues which he didn't know about either so don't need him adding to it, but I definitely think his situation didn't help!

I am the son of a man named Tom.

He was mean because that is how he was made.

He is a product of his genes and his environment/culture and should have been sent for psychiatric treatment years ago, not just be 'held back' in a mainstream school.

He displays all the traits of a psycho. His physical violence was also scary - especially considering that he had previously hit Clyde in the face with a bat for no apparent reason. His creepy video of recording his whole life for some future 'alien race' - wow, talk about self-aggrandizement (a hallmark of a psychopath). He's a very messed up and scary individual.

His personality is already built, and it's been built in a very unhealthy way, so whilst I feel sorry for him, I don't feel sorry that he died (which anyway was by misadventure, brought about by his own behaviour - had he not been the person he was, he never would have ended up on the boat).

He is a menace to his current society and needed to be isolated from it for the safety of others and himself (the usual approach for psychos). At least he would probably still be alive.

Even though he was 100% convinced they were being kind to him (note they had clearly stated they had forgiven him for his previous attacks) he still spewed forth his hate at every opportunity.

He was a lonely kid too, who had learning difficulties but he also was a bit of asshole too. No one is perfect in life, you saw his good side when he gave the present to Sam, wanted to entertain the rest of the group with his rap, said something nice about Clyde's Sandwiches. But you saw his bad side, abusing physical and mentally others in the group about their sexuality, with suicide of Marty's dad, bullying of Sam. He didn't deserve to die, but he was no saint either and that's why I loved this film he was just a normal person with good sides and bad. I do agree with Marty though that he was hiding his true side cause it an advantage for him to get something out of it.
