Same here - the original cast was the best and this film offered a slightly different take on the dark phoenix saga from the comics (or at least the original cartoon series) to make it interesting.
I am watching the Blu-ray of X3, recently, came to know how many hardships the makers pull off to make this film work, both in the side of writing and filming

"X3" has some awesome moments, but quite a lot of stuff that just falls flat. It's one of those movies that doesn't live up to its potential. But it's still better than any of the re-cast re-boot X-Men films.
Wrong, X3 is the best X-Men Movie, period. It is how a Marvel Epic movie should look like. When I was watching Avengers 3 and 4 I was remembering Last Stand final climatic battle. It was back in 2006, still holds up to this time.
Ratner set the tone right, made a good closing chapter in such a short time.
You people like X2 because, it's the movie Logan first showed his rage.
Story wise such a terrible lame chapter
I don't agree. I think it sucks. Frankly I like all the recent X-Men movies set in the past more than the Original Trilogy.
shareI always felt that Scott was offed way too quickly in the film, there should have been a slightly slower transition from Jean to the Dark Phoenix. Mystique was under utilized as well, and her human side should have been explored further, but she did have large roles in the earlier 2 films so I guess there's that.
All in all, I think this film performs much better watching it today than back in 2006.
It's a good film and in the top three of the franchise.
On a rewatch I was surprised at Cyclops getting axed so early (26 minutes in), Xavier also getting axed quite early (50 minutes in). So much so I had a faux memory of Xavier coming back later in the movie through some magical trickery to help everyone out...needless to say it didn't happen.
Mystique also got very little screen time, getting humanized early.
It also surprised me this was the first film to have Beast.
Overall my memory of the original X-Men trilogy was way off.
People don't universally hate this movie, there's a small band of very vocal people who hate on it.
Box office was the top in the franchise (After Deadpool)
Critical reviews, Roger Ebert gave it a thumbs up.
It's not hated by everyone.
