Something that's always troubled me. I've watched this movie about 15 times and have still been trying to figure out what his name is. At the end, XXXX says that if you were as clever as him, you'd know what his name was, yet I still can't figure it out and I don't know where the clues are (if any) in the movie. Any ideas?

It is in the movie but you can't really see it clearly. He signs the papers with that accountant that stole his money with his real name.
shareThere's a scene in his flat where in the background there's a framed photo of him with a seagull on his head. That's the clue. His name is Cliff.

I think not knowing his name is kind of the point... it's another one of those "layers" that makes the mystery all the more impressive. i am actually not certain if there are any clues in the film that give away his name. he says there are, but if that mystery is like the rest of the film, it wouldn't be something you'd have to guess. it would be a concrete clue placed somewhere you might not think to look. also, it was impressive that you get through the film and, to me at least, neer stopped to consider the fact that we didn't know his name.
