It was beautifully filmed and I really liked the second segment of the film where he fell in love with the girl, but I just couldn't relate to the rest of it. It felt like there was nothing interesting to be gained or learned from it. I always try to approach things with an open mind, but this just showed me how worthless some buddhist principles are.
Edit: I feel like judged this film too strongly. While I still might not like it, I change my mind about what I said about it not being interesting and that there's nothing to be gained from it.
Fair play to you for reassessing. I was a bit frustrated by it at the time I finished it, but am still thinking about it and haven't quite worked out what I'll take from it in the long term.
As it stands I'm kind of thinking that it had something to say, but it's not that profound or original. Maybe there's more to it from a cultural and religious perspective that I can't quite grasp, but that's not necessarily a problem with the film, or me for that matter - it may be one of those positive things that you get from seeing films from around the world (ie not just hollywood) that give you a broader perspective of the world, and an understanding that I may not know everything about how other people think and act.
Out of interest - it was the best part of a year between your original post and the edit. What made you come back to this and rethink what you felt? And do you now actually appreciate something that you didn't before, or was it just a feeling that you had been too harsh but basically correct?
I find such stupid post in every nice movie(which r open to interpretation).. Its okay dude..its not ur fault..u r the chosen one who has fulfilled his purpose of life by completing the custom of posting *beep* post along with an explaination out of his low IQ brain... Gr8.. [Sarcasm alert]
film sucked ass. it wasn't satisfying at all. it was well shot and was an intriguing subject. but that's it.
loads of animal cruelty, and a total bloodbath for a film about two monks living on a boathouse.
i'm sure some of the symbolism made a lot more sense to educated buddhists, but the fact that many bits of imagery in the film need explanation is a big flaw.
