Why did Batman get on the train?

Toward the end when he fights Ra's Al Ghul. Was there a purpose to it that i missed. If the plan was to use the bat mobile to take out the bridge and crash the train before it reached Wayne Enterprises then what was the point of getting on the train.

Maybe Gordon would fail

True but Batman could have just taken the bat mobile himself and blown up the bridge. He really didn't need to use Gordon or board the train at all. It just felt pointless.
