'I want an American cheeseburger...'

as opposed to??? I mean the guy is in America. What other type of cheeseburgers are there available? Brazilian cheeseburger? Chinese cheeseburger? That line always makes me laugh

As you know, burgerchains like McDonald's have restaurants in a whole lot of other countries than the US. And if you have ever tried one of their cheeseburgers in another country, like for example in Denmark where I'm from, you would know that they do not necessarily taste the same as in an American McDonald's. Tony Stark being a man who have been to a whole lot of different countries, he have probably learned that he likes the taste of an American burger best...

reply

Point being that he was referring to an American-MADE cheeseburger and not an American-ORIGINATED cheeseburger...

reply

Yes, I understand the point that you are making and you are right. Hamburgers (or any other food products) made by McDonald's in another country taste differently than those made in America. No arguments there.

But you are forgetting that Tony was IN AMERICA when he said that line. He wasn't in Denmark or Germany or France and there are no Danish or Dutch or French McDonald's in America. So if he had just said that he wanted a cheeseburger it would have been sufficient since he was in America so naturally he would get an American cheeseburger.

reply

What you're forgetting is that he had just stepped off a plane from another country. This was his first time being back in America, and so him commenting that he wanted an American cheeseburger really wasn't strange at all.

Exactly. It was symbolic thing to remind himself he's back home.

reply

Yes!

reply

Yes, he was back home. If I'd been through what he'd been through, I'd want some home cooking too!

While McDonald's India doesn't offer any Beef-Burgers, it's not impossible to find Burgers in India.

Beef is consumed regularly in the State of Kerala, where one speciality dish is the "Beef-Fry".

Burgers can be found at T.G.I. Friday's locations in many of those Indian States that don't have an outright ban on consumption and import of beef.
Hard Rock Cafe's are also a good bet on where to find a Burger.

reply

I'd assume that what he meant was that he wanted was a cheeseburger made specifically with American cheese. ("American cheese" not in the broad sense of "cheese made in America", but in the narrow--and legally defined--sense of a certain type of processed cheese that's typically of American manufacture.) Assuming that's what he meant, it'd be clearer to write the line "I want an American-cheese burger . . .".

reply

I live in Japan (came here in 2006), and the McDonald's out here taste exactly the same as in America.

But yeah, he's just glad to be back home. When I visit the States, the first thing I tell my parents is that I want American food. I know I'm in America, so I'll be getting American food, but it's still something to be excited about when you haven't been in the US for two years.

reply

When we lived in Japan in the late 90s, the special sauce on a Big Mac and the fries definitely tasted different than in the US.

reply

Yeah, there was no cum in the sauce in Japan.

I'm dead, and I'm pissed.

reply

I'd always thought he said AMERICAN for the specific reason that you pointed out - he wanted to eat something that's so uniquely American and he was just stressing that because he was back home.

I thought it was fairly obvious that this is what Tony Stark meant. When I saw the title of this thread, I assumed the OP's biggest problem with this line was that you see Stark holding a Burger King bag in the next scene.

America...land of the product plug.

As if the quintessential "American" cheeseburger can be found at Burger King.

reply

It wouldn't be the first Marvel movie to do it either. Spider-Man had Dr. Pepper.

reply

The fact is that actually in Balkans they had "pleskavica in lepinja" which is actually the same as hamburger, waaaay before America was even discovered by the British.

Sory guys, but USA doesnt have any native food at all.

reply

Wrong. The Concord grape, the cranberry & the blueberry are among the States' gift to the world; not to mention popcorn and peanuts. Our diet and our food-producing abilities put Europe and Asia to shame.

reply

Nope that's not the reason that scene was in that movie and why he used Burger King. I posted the real reason further down thread.

reply

Burger King burgers are technically British.

i agree with the 2nd post. i once had a hamburger in france, terrible, terrible decision.

Who goes to France and eats a *beep* hamburger?

American cheeseburgers are made with extra fat & pretentiousness.

Then they add in a few shakes of arrogance, plus a large dollop of self-entitlement.

Mmmmmm! They're the best in the world!

My nephew had to travel to India and tried to get a hamburger (wrong country) and french fries. He lost about 15 pounds before he got home and he was a skinny guy to start.

reply

If he wanted an American cheeseburger, why the hell did he get Burger King?

reply

Why is this even an issue, LOL?
It's not that important for the story, I think

But I think the reason is that he wanted it to be something genuinely American, after spending so much time abroad.
That's why he stressed it so much.

Plus the fact is that America has a loot of food from foreign cultures and are not originally American.

reply

It's an easter egg. The actor Robert Downey Jr stopped doing drugs because of a bad burger he got from Burger King one time. That's his story anyway.

Read my post at the end of the this thread for the real answer to that question.
