The kid...

Did anyone else think the son was extremely annoying talking in a spanish accent? I would never let a nanny do that to my son. It was funny when he said SpongeRoberto though.

reply

Yes, I found him extremely annoying too. It's obvious the nanny/maid is raising the child.

reply

I think that was the point. To emphasize that Dick and Jane were so busy, that the nanny was more of an influence than his parents. I personally thought it was funny, especially the line "What are you doing with the teleVision?" Hehe, cute kid.

reply

I was hoping the kid would get hit by a car or something.

reply

everything you don´t like... you wanna kill it. who are you? bush?

the kid´s accent was the best thing in the movie. a great critic tou all you parents who are too busy working to buy that new cell phone with a vibrator and a capuccino machine in it.

reply

the kid was hilarious.

reply

I HATED the movie -- thought it was hopelessly lame and couldn't handle Jim Carrey's overacting -- but thought the kid's accent was the only funny thing in it! Showed how Dick and Jane were so caught up in their materialism that the Nanny was the biggest influence.

reply

Maybe it would be good for a kid to learn a foreign language?

reply

He wasn't just learning the language, he was speaking with the Spanish accent ALL THE TIME, and that annoyed me to watch. If I were the kid's parent and i did nothing to stop this, after a while, the kid would start wearing a Sombrero(i don't know how that's spelled) and hanging out with illegal aliens, and as a father, that would upset me. I mean it would just irritate me that my son, at a young age, was convinced he was something he wasn't, just because he was spending too much time with my Spanish nanny. I have nothing wrong with Spanish people, they're a great race, and good hearted. The boy's character doing what he was doing kinda annoyed me a little. I also felt like the Dick and Jane shouldn't have been doing what they were doing. I mean, they had no choice at the end, but if i knew i could easily be arrested and spend the rest of my life in jail and i had an innocent child i left behind, the guilt would tear me apart. Only if i had no children, would me and my wife commit burglary and robbery.

Obviously if they were arrested the nanny would continue raising him. lol. I also enjoyed reading your subtle racism. "Wearing a sombrero and hanging out with illegal aliens" as a result of speaking in a "Spanish accent" lmao.

reply

Yeah, that was a little racially harsh, i apologize.

This is all hilarious to me lol, my step dad once said something along these lines, more like "just because your always around those white kids, you don't have to act like one"

LoL, for me though, it wasn't because I didn't hang around other black kids much, except my closest friend, who talked like me, it was because I actually payed attention in class, I can still remember my English teacher's green paper walled colored classroom, where I found my favorite candy, Smarties.

But yeah, in most situations, if your in that environment, you adapt, the kid did.

And of course he could never be Spanish, I could never be white, the thing is the whole idea shows how much skin color is irrelevant to who you are as a person, except for what your environment molds you into being.

And there's no such thing as being another race, it's illogical, I'm one of a kind, of course, I'm judged at Jrock concerts, at anime conventions, just about anything where there are only like two black guys and maybe more black girls, but if that's the price I have to pay for being me, then so be it.

reply

spidysense: "I have nothing wrong with Spanish people"

spidysense 2 second earlier: "the kid would start wearing a sombrero and hanging out with illegal aliens"

I'm going to give you the benefit of the doubt and assume you were an idiot 11 year old when you wrote that but that is still the dumbest and most racist thing I have ever had the misfortune to read.

When the thought police start on Bush, I always get a laugh.

A few years ago, I was assigned by our mayor to work on a project with the local Democrat and Republican Parties, and I quickly realized that Democrat "free speech" didn't extend past the slogans on their T-shirts (save the whales, save the rainforest, save the snail-darter).

At the GOP headquarters, anything and everything was discussed; folks disagreed, but with a sense of humor, and worked together well. Topics included candidates and campaigns, but also sports, grandkids, books, and restaurants. No one was offended, no apologies were necessary; the atmosphere was open and relaxed.

At the Democrat headquarters, conversations were guarded; folks were offended, apologies were necessary, and clarifications as to the "meaning" of statements were common. Many times it was necessary for a "neutral" party to negotiate a peace. It became bizarre over time.

The Republicans rarely spoke of Democrats, except for specifics, such as "The Dems will be supporting HB-123 because it affects public schools." However, the Dems talked about the Republicans non-stop, and used disgusting gutter gossip that implied ugly stuff, without regard for truth. Some Dems even made up lies about Republicans and called them “jokes” yet the Republicans never gossiped or said anything bad about the Democrats. [The exception was Bill Clinton; much was said about him, but that did not extend to anyone else.] The Democrats assumed that the Republicans were talking about them, when they were not. As a result, the atmosphere at the Democrat headquarters was poisonous, nasty, negative, suspicious, and very little was accomplished. Conversely, the atmosphere at the Republican headquarters was happy, cheerful, and productive.

As a result, it was easier to work with the Republicans; the Democrats were jealous of each other, suspicious of each other, and always at each other’s throats.

Best comment ever.

Great movie as well. Pacing, style, plenty of humor, perfect Carrey vehicle and Tea is always a delight.

Really? Oh, my God, the part when Dick and Jane were taking the TV to the car, and the kid threw a fit in the accent? I wanted to kill him. If I, personally, was there, i would pick the kid up in the air, look him in the eye, and be like, "WOULD YOU STOP TALKING WITH THAT ACCENT, YOU ARE NOT SPANISHHHH!!!!!!"

YEA I HATED THE KID.

I WOULDA BEAT THE NANNY WIT A BROOMSTICK IF SHE DID THAT TO MY SON !
LOL JK

they were obviously trying to bring up an issue that has become big among rich families-- both parents work or the father works and the mother goes out shopping all day. they dump the kids at day care or leave them with a nanny who is basically raising the kid. wasn't he being home schooled by her too or something? i haven't seen the movie in a while.

plus they probably wanted to put that scene in with ICE in so much and having the kid know Spanish. remember when they called his house to confirm he was telling the truth and the kid answered the phone and was speaking spanish.lol...and it sounded like he was speaking with an accent because he was hit in the face...

reply

whats wrong with a kid learning Spanish?? And why would you never let a nanny do that to your child?? You don't want him to like Spanish people huh?? We always get a bad rap i thought it was great to watch a film were we are not being beat down. His accent was great and he was funny.

I thought the little boy was adorable. I think that the reason he spoke spanish was to emphasize how much time he spent with the housekeeper/nanny, as opposed to his mom and dad. I thought he did a great job with his spanish, and was one of the highlights of the movie.
I especially love that part where Dick Harper says "Billy, tell your father he's a winner"..

It was cute.
Why would someone say they wanted a 6 year old boy to be hit by a car?
Sick.

reply

THANK YOU!!! I'm so glad someone else thought the son was annoying talking the way he did, and what the nanny did to him was wrong. After a while, i would sit my son down and say, "You may now know the Spanish language, but that does not make you Spanish, so please quit talking in the accent and pretending you're an illegal alien." If he didn't listen to me and continued to talk like that, I would then sit my nanny down and say, "You did this to him, now you get him to stop talking like that or you're fired". I mean it would annoy me to the point where i would have to take my son to a shrink to convince him he's not from Mexico.

I was stationed in Japan until '06, and I knew a lot of guys that had married Japanese women and had children there. They would specifically remain stationed in Japan for their wives and families. What was always fascinating to me was that the kids would learn only the barest of the English language (mostly becuase the fathers would get deployed most of the year). So these American military men would have to learn Japanese fluently just to be able to communicate with their children.

I grew up seeing a similar thing in America, where many of my classmates would be foriegn born, but would learn English at a very young age, while their parents only spoke the language of their homeland and would take years, if not a lifetime to become fully fluent.

I think it's very good for people to become as fluent as possible. Communication solves almost all problems, and breaks down almost all barriers.

very true!

Good attitude man,

and all you Gabachos don't know anything, its good for one to speak Spanish especially in LA, Texas, Florida, New Mexico, New York, New Jersey, Arizona and Tennesse and South Carolina are having a growing number of us Chicanos.

Its a nice thing por unity, like i live in Australia were its predomintly White yet i live in a very Latin area (like East LA) so i dont neccesarily need to speak English much cos the stores speak Spanish, the neighbors speak Spanish and most of the police who patrol speak Spanish, i dont need English right but out of respect for the majority i lernt the language. Spanish people are the majority in most these places, its a nice thing that they made a point of possibly trying to try and unite both peoples maybe....

Spidey-did you miss another post earlier that stated the point and the whole point of the joke? Again Dick and Jane were workaholics who left their child in the care of the Nanny. As such the Kid picked up on the Nanny's speech. You learn to speak through speech. And call me crazy but when you speak in a foreign language don't you naturally tend to accent your voice to the dialect? I find most do when they speak

Yes it always helps to try to learn the accent, it's a subtle part of the language, but I've seen what happens when people try to speak a language without using the accent, it becomes unrecognizable.

reply

You guys are talking about latin-americans (mexicans, colombians...), not spanish people from Spain. It's not really the same thing.

reply

Thats very true bro however let me put it to you like this right. We say were Spanish cos its more universal like Chicano is Mexican-American, Latino is Latin American, Hispanic is everyone except 1st and 2nd and 3rd and 4th and so on generation. So when asking someone we say "oye you Spanish?" and they say "yeah" and then you can find out if there Chicano o Latino o Hispanic so on so forth.

There is a difference but its like this, African Americans are different to Afro Americans cos Afro Americans are West Indian, then you have Africans from Africa, Black British from Britian and so on so because if you may go to a Afro American and accidently say "hey your African American (or watever)" he may be offened so they just say their Black.

Some people are offened when they are told their Latino when there Chicano or Hispanic. Its just the way it is people are jumpy and all that so yeah. Me personally i dont care like im Guatemalan but if someone is like "your Latino/Chicano/Hispanic/Spanish?" i just say yes to any of them, however some will say "im not Latino" then you ask "are you Chicano" and they like yea. Just because some people are different and i guess its polite. We say Spanish cos its just more universal where it includes EVERYBODY.

Good point tho and yeah just some people are real strong Chicano believers like if you were Chinese you dont want to be called Japanese right? So yeah.

Also im not trying to be racist to anybody else im just posting examples.

I thought the movie was funny & I thought the kid was hilarious, but I'm not offended that others don't agree with my opinions, it did illustrate in a very funny way that the parents were more into work than family. I do think that several of you need to chill out a bit, I mean it was a movie, & a comedy at that, so saying "If my kid did that...." or "I'd have this to say the that Nanny..." is a bit over the top. It's a fictional story! Lighten up!

...but then again, those are just my opinions, so you know...plus I live in a very small town that is at LEAST 35% Hispanic, we have Mexicans, Colombians, Puerto Ricans, Spanish people, all kinds of people from predominantly Spanish speaking countries & all of my Hispanic friends LOVED this movie. It made it funnier to know their sense of humor & to imagine them watching it.
