OVER_RATED (DETAILS INSIDE)

First I am going to start this off by saying that I am an active competitor and 3rd degree black belt in Tae Kwon Do and have studied enough to consider myself fairly knowledgeable in the feild of Martial Arts.

This movie is for one, over-rated. Like a psoter in another thread stated, Tony Jaa has no charisma. If you see Jackie Chan or Jet Li fight, they tell a story. They have physcology (sp?) and presence, Jaa has none of that. He does his moves which are ncie indeed, but get repetitive and boring.

On the back of the DVD case this takes a cheap shot on Jackie Chan, I know it is for promototional purposes but please. Jackie Chan and Jet Li are gods of the Martial Arts movie world, and have the experience and charisma to execute well in a film like this. The chase scene was good and Jaa showed amazing agility but hell the barrel scene in SHanghia Knights leaves that in the dust, and that is saying something. Like earlier stated, Li and Chan have physcology, they can make it comedic or show fear etc.

Jaa is skilled at Muy Tae, but his ksills dont overlap into this area. His style is more for real life fighting, not demonstration and coordinated fighting. Three reasons why the fight scenes weren't good...

1)Crappy Partners.
All of the people Jaa fought were bad. Each guy in the bar was horrifically slow and showed no skill, the main henchmen was good but not something better than on a weekly Texas Walker show.

2) Repetition.
Ok we know Jaa can jump and knee someone in the face, or elbow them in head. Ok it is good the first time, but c'mon. He does the same moves over and over and over, showing no diversity in his style. You never see him adapt to knew opponents, he jsut sticks to his basic moves and does them.

3) No storytelling.
They were just fights... that is it.

I will go to admit Jaa has some skill. He can do flips and spin kicks like nothing but he needs to do that rather than his repitive moves. Li and Chan are so great because of there fast hand to hand combat. Do we see any of that? NO.

Overall not a bad movie, but shouldn't be regarded as something special.

Seems to me that if you have a bunch of dudes who think they are better than they actually are posing around and congratulating themselves that you have the most realistic scenario out there.

If you get that one dude who happens by, and the braggadocios don't have the sense to let him go about his business only to have their asses handed to them as a result, that seems more realistic that to expect everyone in a 100 mile radius to have super-mad fighting skills.

Let's face it, most dudes have more in common with Napoleon Dynamite than Lee, Li, or Chan.

And I think the original poster sort of proves my point.

I love that line! I'm saving that for the future!

Remember Lee and Chan at their beginning, they were not like right now, with time, Jaa will become someone!

TOM-YUM GOOONG is even better in some ways than ONG BOK, and ONG BOK is a great film! I won't say much but the fighting is superb and the plot more important. Tony also has some early work but he really wasn't given a chance until ONG BOK.

reply

"Martial arts movies are like porn, they aren't about plot"

That was exactly what I wanted to say. I honestly don't care if the plot is unremarkable, it exists so I can take a breath between scenes, and build up suspence. If it were actually a BAD plot we'd be having a different discussion.

For a movie that didn't come out of Hong Kong or Hollywood, this movie deserves some props. And even though this might not make me sound all that cool, it's nice to see a martial arts movie that makes me feel like I'm watching someone beat the *beep* out of someone else. As a female sometimes I wonder if I can understand a martial arts movie in the same way men do, but the more I read in this discussion the more firmly I believe that there's nothing wrong with me liking this movie for the fight scenes. Repetitive or not, Ting gets the job done, and that's what counts. If it looks like it hurts, it probably works, so why water it down for cinematic effect? We're all martial arts fans here, right? Come on people, we don't need to be spoon-fed our bloody battles, right?

I wish I could see Jaa go against Jet Li.

You need to understand the greatness and details on Muay Thai before you can fully understand the greatness of it. It looks repetetive and simple, but there is more to it then just knees and elbows, as can be seen through the execution and technique of the various movies.

Actually I just wanted to get some beta on the movie - how sad this thread is. Who cares which belt you got - a black belt doesn't make you an expert in fighting or evaluating movies - I took down a 3th dan with my little yellow belt - but that did not make me a good fighter - and certainly not the 3. dan! Who cares how effective a style is as long as people enjoy doing it - and for some of us martial arts is more than just winning against an opponent! Think.
My tip - go and watch vale tudo and friends if you want to see 'real fighting' - you got nothing to do in cinema. We others enjoy ourselves with rather good or bad fighting and storyline in the meantime. Peace!

Today is a good day to die! Well, what if there is no tomorrow? There wasn't one today!

Mr summitpulse is correct go see Vale Tudo, any martial arts or all of them are crappy fighting forms, no really they are look at any competition most fights you simply use 6-7 techniques for kicking and punching, judo a little bit more but still they are limited and a lot of the fights end up on the floor, I am not saying martial arts a bad I think to get into a perfect physical form using martial arts is a best method since you focus on the thing you want with the particular martial art, like karate for endurance and Wing Chun for speed but in a real fight nothing like a horse stance would ever be used (its pathetic, the horse stance) if you want to learn to fight get in a ring and practice, learn the basic kicks and punches but mostly learn grabs and locks…. And watch UFC for real fights

You sir, are oblivious.

Perhaps you recall his 3rd fight in the ring against the opponent with the quick feet? Do you remember one of the first things that Jaa does is look directly at his feet to figure out what moves were coming, this is exceptional adaptability to be able to tell what your opponents going to do almost before they execute their first move.

Perhaps you also remember in the last fight scene when he tried to trip the Burmese boxer but missed. After blocking a few blows after the miss, he tried it again, but assumed that he would miss so he prepared, spun around and landed a kick to the face that was totally unexpected.

While Jaa does use a lot of the same moves, for one thing he doesn't need to for most of his opponents, once he figures out their style, he can use his own without hesitation. You were saying about hand-to-hand combat? That's one move executed at different parts of the body and blocked a few times, hardly diverse. Jaa has at least as many moves as Li and Chan.

Lastly about the storyline. First of all, if you watch action/martial arts movies for the story, then you are truly lost. Secondly, while the plot wasn't anything terrific, there was still a concrete goal that fueled Jaa's fights and an emotional section near the end. All in all, the plot was as much as the movie needed.

"knew" is an english word and you still didn't use that correctly.

You think anyone involved in Ong Bak gives a crap what you think?
Tony Ja grew up in crap, on the boarder of Cambodia in probably the poorest area of Thailand.

Learning his crat he's risen to the top of Thai society and loved by everyone and seen as hero to just about every person in the Kingdom. He was even granted audience with the King.
Then you have what he does to promot the movie, he's flown around the world and made to do stunts to crows of people at Shows in Singapore, Hong Kong and Paris...with no wires etc.

Then you come alomng pointing out flaws in what the guys does? He works his ass off. I've got friends who know his family and they never see him coz he's always working.

Seeing as how Jackie loves him as well, who really gives a crap what you think? Not a single person in Siam...that's for sure.

Here, here maxibon i salute you and agree 100%

I personally thought he made Jackie Chan like an arthritic pensioner in ong-bak.
The non comat stunts ( jumping, running on peoples heads etc ) where just as incredible as the fight scenes. The story wasnt amazing but its a martial arts flick for gawds sake. The eye watering punches and kicks where the dialogue of this film.

For anyone who would like to see how welll different styles go up against one another, watch a TV show called fight school. Its a show in which 12 british martial artists are taken to this school where they do training and challenges each week, and the weakest has to fight another to stay in the school. Its a great show.

reply

I follow martial arts and MMA fighting on a weekly basis, i know the stuff, but you "experts" really need to shut up about what the different arts are and what they're supposed to look like. This particular art is called CINEMA, it's different, appreciate it for what it is. You don't see a bunch of movies about hospitals and doctors being bashed by heart surgeons and physicians, do you?? Just try to enjoy a movie for once, damn it!!

The poster of this thread says they have studied Taekwondo....well so have I. I have also studied Aikido, jeet kune do, Karate, wing chun, Greco-roman wrestling and a couple of weapon based camps (tai-chi sword, sai katas,etc.). So I feel that learning one form of fighting/self defence doesn't allow anyone to down talk a movie of this calibre. Have you spent time as a stunt performer? Just watching out-takes from this film made me appreciate the skill involved even more.

What the poster of this thread has done is the equivalent of playing street fighter II and then thinking they know everything about martial arts! just grow up.

This film was made on a shoe-string budget, Jet li and Jackie chan work on budgets way beyond the gross national budget for Thailand. give them a chance to grow. Jackie was laughed at before becoming the legend he is now, so stick with Jaa as his talent for acting grows.
