Did you see this or the remake first?

I've personally never seen "The Uninvited" (though I've heard it's decent) so obviously the original for me. I think the order of which you see them really impacts your view.

I was breath-taken with the depth and drama of this movie, but after two friends and I watched it, all they did was compare it to the "The Uninvited" which I find unfair. Because they knew of the twist at the end they weren't emotionally involved throughout. And even then when I explained to them the step-mom thing (in which Su-mi is creating scenarios in her head where she plays herself and her step-mother to be there for Su-yeong) they didn't seem to care. It's my understanding "The Uninvited" didn't delve this far in, but still they were dispondant.

They always say whichever you see first you like more, which is really too bad for anyone who saw the remake before this gem.

You've heard wrong. It's totally pathetic. Imagine the Disney Channel remaking the Korean film and you have some idea how shallow and stupid it is.

I saw the Korean masterpiece first. I don't even recommend bothering with The Uninvited unless you like trash.

Haha, I'll take your word on it.

And it's true, this movie IS a masterpiece.

The original, baby! The remake didn't interest me in the slightest.

This film is beautiful. From the cinematography, to the acting, the script, etc. It really is a masterpiece and my heart breaks every time for Su-Mi.

The original first, then The Uninvited. For me they're almost completely different movies. I love both for different reasons. I think that watching the original first is the best thing to do.

Who am I here?

I don't watch any of those as usually they stink, didn't even know there was a remake.

If you don't believe in Jesus Christ and are 100% proud of it, put this in your sig.

I'm living proof that isn't true! :D

I saw The Uninvited first, unaware that it was aremake of ATOTS, and I truly hated it. Then I saw ATOTS, and I think it's one of the ten greatest movies ever made (as well as the best movie of the decade).

Cheers!

I saw The Uninvited just then. It was a decent movie, but really nothing compared to this.

Saw A Tale of Two Sisters first. The Uninvited is crap in comparison.

I saw ATOTS first - grabbed it randomly at the video store and was very glad I did! I saw the Uninvited a few years after it so I already knew the twist in it when it came.

But of course ATOTS is far superior in every way - atmosphere, performances, building up of suspense and subtlety in its approach. The Uninvited, while I thought it was fairly decent, doesn't have the same impact. One reason (this may sound biased) is that the way Americans make their horror films nowadays is not very imaginative and uses the same tactics of pretty much throwing scares at you when you expect them. What's more - the opening scene of the film made it look more like a teenage sex film at the beginning.

Also in the Uninvited, I think the relationship with the two sisters was nowhere near as strong as in ATOTS. For one thing, the sister who is meant to play Su Yeong's character was irritating and annoying so in the end you didn't really care that she was didn't exist.

And ATOTS has top notch performances - in particular from the step mother.

Unfortunately, America just doesn't seem to have learnt their lesson in the art of subtlety and building up the suspense. If you have ever seen the Chinese horror film 'The Eye' compared with the Jessica Alba version (utter crap), some of the scenes they copies from the Chinese one were utterly laughable and had no suspense in it.
