overrated

I thought the story was weaker than people are claiming, this movie is not an 8.4/10, the story is disjointed thematically like a schizophrenic worldview, the plot in general is a stretch, most notably what Woo Jin points out about Dae Su imprisoning his daughter in the same place he was imprisoned, I know how the movie sells it, I'm just not buying, not that this movie was exactly realist in nature, I mean, he even says "are you really that dumb?", exactly, not only is he that dumb, he's not done being dumb; it seemed like they had to have that character say that because of the utter absurdity of that plot element

the action sequences are mediocre, better has been done before and since, and I can't tell if the acting is good, because of the comically bad voice over work, especially MiDo who sounds like Anime porn, that is, except for the Woo Jin character who took me out of the ominous tone he was supposed to create with inappropriate gestures and facial expressions, I knew his acting wasn't good

but then, neither is Oldboy a 1 or 2, it's really a high 5, closer to 6 but not quite

I thought it was overrated too, the ending was weird and disturbing just for the sake of being weird and disturbing.

This movie is just a mix of Saw and Charles Bronson's movies, it's unbelievable how it is overrated.

hello there

give the movie the 5 or 6 you think it deserves, but dont call it overrated, you are not the on who sets the rates, you are just another viewer with his opinions. and may i add that your opinion as you can see by the ratings is very diferent from the majority of viewers. so yes you are entitled to your opinion, but you are worng and i hate you

Never watch dubbed versions; always watch the originals with subs.

Other than that, it's not overrated. If any it is underrated. Both hollywood and bollywood remade this movie with lesser qualities.

*shrug* I've only ever seen the dubbed version and I enjoyed the hell out of it.

reply

Yeah nothing wrong with dubbed versions if you don't mind. But I mind as the original tonality is usually lost in dubbed versions.

Everything about the original version is 3 scales up in all, directing, acting ( although someone can safely declare that Brolin somehow 'saved' the American version and gave you a single reason to watch it), photography, even it's musical score. The Korean movie is totally immersive and although slow it feels fast paced, while Lee's picture, apart from being an almost total trace, feels disjointed and near the end it wants to look like something between 'Silence of the Lambs' and '7even'. In the original you bear witness to a man's struggle to keep his sanity while in the remake it's just like watching a Die Hard episode. Too bad for Lee because he's an inspiring director in general and this is the only Brolin movie I don't really like.
