The ratings had been dropping the last few cycles. In your opinion, what do you think that made them go down? I say picking some of the contestants that she picked and letting people move forward that shouldn't have.
Eugenia stayed on way later than she should have, and even made the Top 3 when it was clear that she should have been axed way before she was. She took mediocre pictures for most of the time, and then when it was just a few Models left, she suddenly went into "Serious" mode and begun taking good pictures. Her Matador picture is amazing. Even Tyra mentioned,"Eugenia, your eyes looked lifeless in most of your shots, but with your Matador picture, I am wondering who is this girl with the fire in her eyes?"
I didn't see what was so great about that picture. I really liked her water picture though. I didn't even pay attention to Melrose. I also thought that her Cover Girl picture was nice.
Personally I think contestants staying longer than deserved, etc, could be seen as subjective and having happened in earlier cycles too.
I would argue that perhaps with the show being around for quite some years that viewers were getting tired of it, but I also think it wasn't promoted very well particularly in later cycles. I seem to remember the premiere date of Cycle 22 kept changing and even us fans on here didn't seem to know exactly when it was starting, so a casual viewer was unlikely to know when it had started.
I also think the axing of Ms J, Mr Jay and Nigel was a controversial move that likely could've turned off loyal fans by that point. I'm not sure how the ratings were from Cycle 19 onwards, but I do think for me personally Cycle 19 was too much of a change, what with the new judges/axing of long term judges, and also bringing in the new format of the online scoring/comeback, and reducing it to one cycle per year. I think a lot of familiarity had gone by that point and I'm sure I remember seeing online quite a few long term fans had given up on the show.
I personally didn't mind too much the concept of having a different "theme" each cycle as in a way I think it kept the show going a bit longer, but it did seem confusing to me as it was almost as if the show didn't know what it was anymore. Cycle 15 and Cycle 16 seem to take an approach that it was more high fashion with relevant prizes and guest judges. But then from Cycle 17 it seemed more about the themes, branding and social media/celebrity side.
I remember seeing on here fans saying about Cycles 20-22 with the inclusion of male contestants becoming more just like any other reality show with the contestants hooking up.
They should have had all the male models be gay to stop any models dating, unless they were gay dating which would have been still slightly Taboo, but not as Taboo as say 20 years ago.
For me, it was the inclusion of the men. It became too heavily focused on the relationships.
Also, the fact that so few contestants genuinely became "top" models - in the early seasons, there was always hope that there'd be an antm equivalent of Kelly Clarkson or Susan Boyle, someone who'd be globally known and very wealthy. As the seasons wore on, it became clear that there was unlikely to be such a person.
I agree about the relationships. I felt like I wasn't watching America's Next Top Model I felt that I was watching the Real World and I don't like that show? Also I think that there are always people that are picked that have potential, but for the most part some of the contestants haven't been that great for the last few seasons.
100% agree with the inclusion of male models and the competition element taking 3rd place in the show. Getting rid of staples/familiar faces like the Jays and Nigel made it harder to accept the new format IMO. It just didn't feel like the same show at all. I want to see the catty female models clawing their way to the top and abundant meltdowns! Not seedy hook ups and Kelly's nasty attitude. No thanks.
1) I really disliked when the Jays and Nigel left. Sure, Mr Jay could be mean or annoying but it was just so much better then. Kelly has grown on me though. I think she is funny.
2) I think the social media aspect was OK to try for one cycle but it just took too much away from the modelling and focused more on challenges and the home viewers. When Leila got booted off it was ridiculous. She may not be everyone's favorite but she was/is a good model.
3) Tyra and her ridiculous made up names/Pot Ledom/Tooky etc. (Smize is the only thing I like that she came up with. I despise the whole tooch thing). I understand it is her show and of course she might gear it towards herself; and that is her right. But it just made it too goofy. I still love her though for bringing us this amazing show.
4) The guys. Again, I trying it for one cycle would have been a great idea. But I just prefer the all girl cycles. Mainly because it's too Real World and not enough modelling with them there. Mirjana (rip) ruined her cycle with her bitchy, gangsta, sleazy, sex, shtick. I can't even watch that cycle now. I would not mind one all guys cycle though.
Men can be just as catty as women. Fabio had a reality show called Mr. Romance and the men were always at each other's throats and there was no women in the cast. Look at some of the fights that happened on this show between men: Romeo and Adam, Denzel and Will, Bello and Devin, Bello and Mikey, and most guys didn't like Chris H in cycle 20.
1.) Axing original judges (Jay Manuel is a FANTASTIC creative director, I immediately disliked his successor's taste, which sucks when the show's fashion used to be a big part of the entertainment for me).
2.) Social media and scoring system -- one of the best parts of ANTM was the qualitative evaluations done by the panel. They took each model's development, attitude, and talent into account when deciding who should continue. The scoring left everything up to chance.
3.) The winners never went on to be top models, making the competition less impressive. The caliber of the prizes and guest stars seemed to decrease, too, once it became clear that the show couldn't deliver successful models.
4.) Boy-girl cycles.
5.) All the ANTM lingo Tyra invented for herself (except for "smize," as mentioned above). It all became a bit ridiculous with the "TyTy Tip" and "TyOver" nonsense. The host tying her branding into everything felt cheap, tacky, and borderline outrageous. By the end of the series she was basically just using the show to promote her makeup line.
I'm reading through the other people's responses. And that is the thing. There were so many changes... The show got gimmicky... I know it is a gimmick show, casting models, but they even overlooked that just for the sake of being different each season.
They made too many changes and couldn't recover.... And then there was Tyra's statement that every season from then on is going to have a special theme to it... She said that quite a few cycles back.. And that was the death of the show...
But I lost a lot of interest when the judges kept changing. Janice Dickinson was a great judge, they got rid of her, then Twiggy was a great judge and they got rid of her. Then it started going downhill.. Then they kept changing judges, and then coming up wqith new themes each cycle. And then the judges kept making the wrong cuts, because all the other crew had changed and the show just couldn't chose the great models anymore. Tyra had her hands tied because of all the changes I'm sure she herself had instigated.
i cant watch anymore because every. single. episode. the top 4 or 3 are ridiculous picks by the judges. the ones that are runner ups or let go always have more successful careers than the winners.
also the way they shout "ttyyraa maaaiill" and "LLuuuv Tyra" FOR YEARS. like stop. that is beyoonndd annoying.
the fact that tyra says the same stuff every judging. WE KNOW the prizes and the judges. why the eff does she have to repeat all that stuff every. time.
the kinds of the girls they cast. they think that by going with all diverse is good which it is in terms "looks" and i am NOT RACIST but why do they always seem to cast these stero types of "nice white girls"....and the most ghetto, bitchy black girls. like there are girls out there, black white asian indian whatever who have sob stories for america to care about. not just girls from harlem, or the streets that act crazy and mean in the house. it gets old.
