Hitler's most idiotic move

I'm impressed by many of the intelligent replies in the threads here. People who are familiar with history already know this: his downfall began with his idiotic decision to invade the Soviet Union. Like Napoleon, hubris caused him to think that his armies could survive the "war of attrition." Granted, the nazis were initially decimating the Soviets, but as they are known to do, the Russians just withdrew deeper into the country and let the winter kill the invading forces.

I literally shudder when I consider what would have probably happened to England if he wasn't stupid enough to wage two wars against those two powers at once. It also began Stalin's literal obsession with killing him. It was just stupid all around. The Soviets had no intention of interfering with him prior to the invasion.

Also, in the movie he says, "the east will eventually triumph over the decadent democracies of the west" -- wrong again, dumb--s.

The only mistake Hitler made was having Mussolini as an ally.

that's true

Losing 6 weeks bailing him out the Caucasus and again in North Africa.

One of three, or possibly all 3 are equally idiotic.

1. Starting ww2 in the first place, granted he done well at first taking out france but Germany and Italy had no hope of invading UK.
2. Declaring war on USSR, as if he didn't have enough problems with back and forth war in Africa and failing to get air superiority over UK he decided to invade the largest country in the world, at that point axis had no chance.
3. Declaring war on US that rapidly sped up his inevitable defeat and helped the allies as no US president wanted to declare war on Germany as it would've been political suicide. He done the president a massive favour giving him reason to enter the war.

As several characters in the film say (in various contexts) "Give it time".

Looking a bit more likely now than when the OP posted in 2006.

Either one was going to invade the other, despite the non-aggression pact. It was simply a matter of time. The two could not coexist.

It was really up to the Anglo-American Empire which side they wanted to win. They picked Stalin.

Hitler's war in the West was totally 100% pointless if the end goal was not invading the Soviet Union. He wanted to get all the Western countries under his control, and then join together to crush the Soviet Union.

He was too nice to the British. Had he crushed the British, which he could have done, then he'd have America, Canada, and Australia on his side as allies against the Soviets.

The ONLY reason Stalin gave material to Hitler was because Stalin wanted the Western Europeans to split entirely in half, and war against themselves to destruction, so he could invade. He would have gone all the way to London if he was able.

if hitler could have crushed britain, he would have, he was not one to pull punches. it was not even a close call.
and assuming that anything germany did could have gotten the usa and the commonwealth as allies is simply ridiculous.
