I have only seen Talvisota, The Unknown Soldier (both versions) and this. But based on that I would recommend to you Stalingrad (1993).

You have your opinions I have mine.

reply

Memphis Belle

Stalingrad is one of my favorite movies. I'm waiting for the remake which also stars Thomas Kretschmann from the 1993 version.

reply

I also want to see the Stalingrad movie coming out. Mainly because it is a Russian movie that is based on the battle.

You have your opinions I have mine.

Can't believe no one has mentioned the greatest of all WW2 films. It's actually a documentary in 26 parts, made in 1973. You know what I'm talking about.

reply

Well I meant movies but yeah now that you mention it I also have a gigantic documentary collection too - so please if anyone can recommend some good WWII era documentaries, please do so.

Are you speaking of the World at War? There's actually 34 episodes as 8 additional eps were released after the initial 26. I think my fave docs in a series are The World at War, Hitlers Bodyguard, German War Files, Century of War and Battlefield but there are TONS of single episode docs that are truly fantastic as well.

reply

Unless I missed it somewhere, I don't believe anyone mentioned The Boy in the Striped Pajamas. It focuses mostly on the concentration camp aspect of the war but has elements from the point of view of a german soldier's family. Well worth a viewing plus a realistic and atypical Hollywood ending.

Another one to add to your list - "The Reader".
For me, "The Pianist" is one of the greatest films of all time, irrespective of genre.

I recently discovered this

http://www.imdb.com/title/tt1883092/?ref_=fn_al_tt_1

and i can highly recommend it to anyone with a healthy appetite for WWII related material.

in 3 episodes(each around 90 min)they tell an amazing story of 5 german friends;
1jew,his girlfriend with a burning ambition to become famous, and 3 of them send to the eastern front 1 as a nurse, and 2 brothers one as a young life enjoyer the other already as a proven officer and with a promising career ahead

story starts at the beginning of the war when theyre still quite innocent but the war drastically affect each and one of them.
depsite its not having a saving private ryan or der untergang budget, its very well done and acted extremely well and they absolutely do not avoid the tragedies and brutalities of war as it develops its getting really dark, grit and depressing (untergang style)

the only flaw is the writers took some liberties to allow some "coincidences" to occur wich are not always completely plausible.
but minor flaw compared to the overall satisfaction i had with one of i must say the most original WW2 storytelling i ever had

enjoy!

Thanks for the recommendation! Generation War looks like something right up my alley. I see a couple big name German actors in the lineup as well...that's a plus. Much appreciated!

reply

you're most welcome...sharme me afterwards your thoughts about it. enjoy!

reply

Unsere Mütter, unsere Väter (Generation War) was a really good mini series, I enjoyed it a lot. It is exactly the kind of film I enjoy watching. Thanks again for recommending it!

reply

well you also many thanks in the list you published i discovered some nive things as well...these winds of war and its sequel...holy crap thats one of the best things i ever saw.
so you returned me already the favor :)

reply

Winds of War / War and Remembrance IS probably one of the best if not THE best there is. It's not entirely accurate but it's real close. I've watched them both at least 5 times and even though it takes awhile to get trough all the episodes there's hardly a boring moment in them, for me at least.

reply

I would recommend The Counterfeiters and Radio Days, although the latter is really more a period comedy leading up to WW 11 but it has good music and shows how the war effected ordinary people.

reply

Into the White, very good film.

reply

Why in the world would you make an effort to watch the disgraceful 2008 remake of Die Brucke instead of the original? By all means, seek that one out instead! I also highly recommend Germany, Year Zero.

There's a whole bunch of excellent Japanese films on the subject of WWII, which I would urge you to see:
Under The Flag Of The Rising Sun
Fires On The Plain
The Human Condition
Grave Of The Fireflies
Barefoot Gen
Black Rain

reply

Yes I finally saw the original Die Brucke, the reason why I hadn't seen it is because I could not find the appropriate English subtitles for it - the same thing with the Adventures of Werner Holt...the only version of that movie I can find is dubbed in Russian, ACK! The movie looks so good too. I never give up though, just put the movies into a folder on my PC until I can find a better copy or accurate subs at least.

Thanks for the list of Japanese films I wrote them all down and plan to give each one a view! I've been watching a few Korean films on the subject of the Korean War so it'll be nice to see their point of view on WW2.

Again, THANK YOU TO ALL who give recommendations - I write every single movie title down and view the ones that I can actually find. Keep them coming everyone! =)
