Why does everybody hate this movie?

OK, I LOVED this movie and I can't understand why everybody hates it...I wanna know! If u hate it then please give me your opinion!

1.You might want to learn grammer before trying to defend someone, it makes no sense.

2. Hilary Duff isn't a great actress. She's got this twitchy thing..x.x

3. The plot was horrible. Reminded me of some other Disney Channel movie she did; Something about a Army/Boot Camp. >.>

4. ...It wasn't a great movie. Some of the songs were ..okay. But the movie by it's self.....-shudder-

5. No. She can't sing. She's pitchy, and has a falsetto.

6. Why are you here if you want to bitch at someone else for bitching about a bitchy movie. O.o Oh and, you might want to keep your opinions to your self. We don't give a damn. ( But alas, I don't particularly -care- if you don't give a damn. >.> Anyone can express opinions as they please, and they can debate others. So...Nyah. >.> Hilary Duff Groupies loose the right.

reply

Ok enough profanities before I wash out your mouth with soap. But here we go: about #4 the movie was called Cadet kelly and while not one of her best still one of the best movies I ever saw. #5 she is the best singer I ever heard. what is this twichy thing i keep hearing about I saw nothing of the sort either time when i saw the movie.

reply

Wow...your telling somebody else to learn grammar when you can't even spell "grammer"...
If you thought the movie was a bitchy movie then why did you watch it???

By the way..I think Hilary Duff is a great actress and she has a great voice!!

reply

I just watched this film.

I'm by no means an accomplished singer. In fact, when I sing, people's ears tend to bleed.

However, I've produced numerous musical stage productions, and what I don't get is why they cast someone who obvious is not a good singer.

I enjoyed the film for what it was - predictable, formulaic, somewhat cheesy.

But her weak falsetto voice was nearly unbearable. I can only imagine they figured "Screw it - we need an actress more than we need a singer!" Unfortunately, for this film, they needed both - and did not get it.

I can't say I HATE the film, because I was completely bored to death while watching it and did have some good actors in it. Even Hillary Duff's acting was fine.

But her singing...good god! You'd think they would have gotten someone to either sing for her or they would have forced her to take vocal lessons until she could do justice to the part. If you notice, her voice is weak....weak, weak, bloody weak! Clearly this project was not to be taken seriously by the director, as he (or she, whichever it was) should have been much more insistent on her singing being up to snuff.

How can you enjoy a film about a singer who sings like someone who has no training whatsoever. Just based on her singing in the film, it was completely unthinkable that she'd make it onstage at the local community playhouse, let alone into a musical conservatory program.

For me, every time she opened her mouth to sing, Hillary Duff ruined the movie just a little bit more.

Rockin Chic, your comment was related to the post I put up.

I have to admit, I am surprised to hear she HAS a music career.

I don't 'hate' Hillary Duff, as was suggested above...(though I am not sure if that was in relation to my post or the original post), but I can certainly say, without hesitation, that her singing in this film was simply bad.

Do you remember the diaghram scene? After she is told to use her diaphragm to help give her voice strength? Well, where was the bloody diaphragm use in the movie afterwards? It was nonexistent. She never demonstrates that she can use her diaphragm.

Or, take for instance, the scene where she is in the classroom and has to sing the scales. The girl before her does it correctly, "la, la, la"..whatever the hell the vocalization was she was doing. Hillary's is a Mariah Carey-ish mishmash of notes, which is fine for the dramatization of the scene, but points strongly to the fact that she could not pull the notes off in a structured way.
If she could, she certainly did not display it anywhere in the rest of the film.

Or, listen to the scene where they are in the park singing. I forget the song, but Haillry Duff's voice is weak and seems off-key at parts.

If Hillary Duff can sing, I mean trully sing from her diaphragm and project her voice, why does she use that weak, tinny sounding falsetto for the entire film?
It just doesn't sound good.

I understand you like her music, yaddah yaddah yaddah. I am not a Hillary Duff fan going to see a movie starring someone I like.

I am a film lover going to watch a movie. Plain and simple.

And as such, I have to stand by what I wrote above.

It appeared as though the filmmakers opted for a celebrity with a following who could possibly fill theatre seats as opposed to a someone with a strong voice. Hillary Duff is not "awful". I don't have some rabid hatred of the chick. It is just too much of a stretch to think this girl with the tin ear, falsetto voice, and weak projection would get entrance into a musical conservatory program...and WIN a coveted scholarship.

The movie was good. Her singing was not.

reply

[deleted]

that made no sense, kid.
Basically as you grow up you will mature and so will your ability to distinguish what is good singing and not. I hope you will audially mature soon, as Hilary Duff is nothing more than your girl next door singing ability. I'm sure there are girls that can sing better at your school. Listen to them at the talent quest or something and compare it to DUFF. You will hear the difference.

I agree with a couple things on this thread.

I didn't hate the movie, it was cute, entertaining, nice message, and a couple nice cameos from actors I like. I'm not a Hilary Duff fan by any means but she does make some cute movies, not stellar, but cute movies that you watch when you're bored. I liked Cinderella Story too.

Hilary Duff's acting is tolerable, again, very one-dimensional, which is ok for a movie like this.

Her singing... just, terrible in my opinion. I mean it follows the typical overly compensated, tweaked, eletronically enhanced, pop sound that seems to be popular nowadays but I think she's one of the worse of this genre.

Frankly, my biggest problem with this movie is that there is no way in hell she would have ever gotten into a school like this in the first place. She doesn't have that kind of talent. Honestly- on the the only reasons she has a music career is because her name had appeal to the right demographic. She didn't get started singing and ranks amoung those, Linsay Lohan for example, who also isn't a great singer. Someone said about her diaphram and using it? Yeah I agree, she doesn't at all. (I am a vocal major in college and know these rules, not to brag but in case anyone feels the need to question my qualifications on this accusation.) Her voice is also way too nasal, if that is indeed her true unaltered voice. When she starts singing it sounds like a voice on the synthesizer, which is cheating in my opinion. I understand she's young and unexperienced, especially in the movie, but there are plenty kids her age who do know how to sing properly.

I'd like to think this isn't taken as bashing the film, but stating an honest opinion and some true facts about music schools.

Yeah.. I personally loved this movie so much.. it was really sweet. Really sad though. I think that taking all those cliche things and putting them together is origonal.. if there was only one it would be boring and to top it off they made their own plot with it, using all the cliches. And for those who can't stand Hilary's guts (I am NOT one of those people, she sings alright, she acts good) you've gotta admit it's entertaining. And I loooove Oliver James < 3

I JUST HAVE TO SAY TO THOSE WHO HAVE "CUT DOWN" THIS MOVIE- THAT HILARY DUFF IS A NICE GIRL, A GREAT ROLE MODEL, AND HAS ALOT MORE MONEY THAN YOU DO. SO OBVIOUSLY SHE'S DOING SOMETHING RIGHT. THE MOVIE WAS GREAT.

reply

Okay, for what the movie was, a fluffy teen movie, it was alright. I mean, sub-par compared to other films, obviously, but it wasnt the worse film I've seen. To sit and watch it on a rainy day with my little sister didn't kill me, and it even had me giggling at some points. It was, all in all, a cute movie aimed at my 10 year old sister.

To momluvshilary, I don't believe anyone is debating Hilary Duff's personality. I'm sure she's nice, and she's an okay role-model (my little sister loves her), and, yes, she has more money than the rest of us, but that's not exactly a measure of a person's talent. I mean, the music and movie industries are all about who you know and how pretty you are. If you ask any choral instructor or voice teacher, they ill tell you that Hilary's voice is weak and that she doesn't breath properly as a singer. It just a technical truth.

Personally, I don't like Hilary's music or her acting in the majority of things she's starred in. The same way I don't like Britney Spears' music, or Jennifer Aniston's movies. I have nothing against them, they they just aren't my cup of tea. Why do people get so defensive over opinions like this? No one is saying YOU can't like it.

THIS MOVIE IS SOOOOOOOOOOOOOO CLICHE. PREDICTABLE. AVERAGE. DULL. MUNDANE. A 3-YEAR OLD COULD HAVE THOUGHT OF THIS. SERIOUSLY. I'VE KNOWN 3-YEAR OLDS WHO WRITE LITTLE STORIES. THEY'RE ALL JUST LIKE THIS. HILARY DUFF IS AS WORTHLESS TO ME AS SOME GUY IN ITALY HAVING AN ITCHY NOSE. I DON'T CARE AND I WANT NOOOOOOOOO PART OF IT. HILARY DUFF IS A HORRIBLE ACTRESS. SHE JUST... CAN'T DO IT. . SHE IS A BAAAD SINGER. NOT THAT I COULD DO MUCH BETTER. SHE CAN'T SING WORTH SHIIIIIIIIIIIIIT!!!!!! THIS WAS ONE OF THEEEE WORST MOVIES I HAVE SEEN IN MY ENTIRE LIFE!! IT WAS SO INCREDIBLY STUPID!!!

HILARY DUFF... NO. AVOID HER AT ALL COSTS!!

Really, if someone had taken Hilary's role, this movie wouldn't be nearly as hated as it is. Many people have a grudge against her, which I think is a bit unfair because compared to a lot of celebrities today she's a good role model for youth. She hasn't majorly messed up or set a bad example.. unlike people such as Britney, Paris Hilton, even Lindsay Lohan.. etc. It's stupid to judge the movie just because she's in it.

I saw this film on a 10 hour ferry trip across the Bass Strait to Tasmania. I was pretty desperate for some entertainment so thought I'd give it a shot. I'm not the biggest fan of Hilary Duff, but I found the movie suprisingly likeable. Yeah it's predictable and cheesy, but whatever. It's definitley not a great film. But it held my interest and had some good stars and awesome moments.
Yeah, Hilary doesn't have the best voice but I thought her acting had improved in this film. She appeals to a certain audience and the film was skewed at a particular audience. I think people need to accept that before they critisize it.

I'll just start off by saying that I don't hate the movie. No, I actually enjoyed it. There was just one big problem in the movie that made it less enjoyable. And that was Hilary Duff. If they had hired a different actress, I would have liked it more. I'm sorry, but I can't stand Hilary Duff.

Honestly, I love this movie. Not a big Hilary Duff fan but I must say she's an amazing actress. This movie is well-acted and has a good storyline. I don't understand why some of you people see the worst in movies? Hilary Duff is a great actress and I like her as one! And her in A Cinderella Story was really good. So you guys need to stop hating on movies because Hilary Duff is in it. I don't like her either as like a singer but she's excellent actress and her singing in this movie was great! I loved this movie.

I loved this movie too. In my own opinion, most of the people that voted for this movie haven't even seen it. They just give it a low rating just because Hilary Duff is in it. I will agree, Hilary Duff is a terrible actor and she's done some pretty crappy movies, but this one was very good. It would probably have a higher rating if Hilary Duff wasn't in it. But that's just my opinion.

I despise this movie.
I have watched it once and never watched it again.
Hilary duff cant sing to save her life.
It always turns out perfect in the end.
It goes on and on
She has some serious issues.
Everytime she sees a light she starts spazzing out cuz it reminds her of her dead brother.
If she spazzes out every time she sees a light why is she there is first place.
If you listen to her voice when she sings it realy high and squeaky.
but then when she goes to the concert her voice sounds perfect cuz she is lyp singing.
I just think this is the stupidest movie in the world.

reply

I just thought the writing was REALLY BAD. I totally could not get into the story. Sooooo boring!

reply

True, the story is predictable, but I've seen other movies that have the "small town girl moves to big city and isn't popular at first, but then gets popular" story, before...but they weren't like this...

...But I have to say that Hilary Duff's acting was horrendous and really phony on some occasions and nearly ruined the whole movie for me. Many of the scenes were just unbelievably cheesy, too. That and Hilary's voice sounds like its prerecorded every time--now, I know that actors and actresses voice are prerecorded in most films, but at least it sounds a capella when it's supposed to. Her voice sounded like her CD was somewhere playing. Her crying scenes were also just bad. Usually there should be a bit more believable angst.

Now, no one attack me, alright? I really did enjoyed some of it and a lot of the songs I liked. (Ending theme especially ) And it's not as if the movie hurt anyone. It was a nice, simple little feel-good movie with a story we may have all heard before, but whatever. 2.5/5

"Au revoir, les enfants."

reply

I'm 22 and I love this movie. I think it has a good story line and the main purpose of the movie isn't about her going to this school, it's about accepting that she can still be happy even though her brother isn't around, it's about overcoming the hopelessness of the situation. She even says in the movie "It's like this voice comes into my head and it's like 'How can you be happy when Paul is dead.'" I think a lot of people relate to this movie, overcoming the death of someone you love, and I think that's what makes it such a good movie. I think Hilary Duff is a great actress and there aren't many of her movies I don't like. As for her singing, it's not really my style, but I like some of her music, including what was in the movie. The songs were relevant to the movie, and that's why they were put in.

reply

For once I'd like to see someone defending this movie with some other argument besides "ur so mean, hilary rox! ure 2 stupid". I believe the original poster asked why people disliked this movie, and I believe a fair share of the people who have replied here have done so in a coherent and thorough manner. I think I'll add in my $0.02. While I don't hate this movie, I do believe it's highly overrated:

First of all, get over it, the movie is incredibly cliche. Yes C-L-I-C-H-E. The fact that it borrows elements from a variety of "teeny bopper" films does nothing to deter the obvious. I could atleast name a dozen movies with a plot too similar to "Raise your Voice". So, reason #1 the movie is overrated: The plot has been exhausted and beaten to death, overdone and too cliche.

On to the acting and singing. Look, I have nothing against Duff; I actually enjoyed Lizzie McGuire (and I was around 17 when it finished its run). But you fans have to give it up. Hilary can't sing worth a damn. No, she's not the worst ever..but she doesn't have the talent or authentic skill to back up the sort of performance her character was supposed to pull off. On with Ms. Duff; her acting is very one-dimensional, she portrays the same type of character in almost every film she makes. Her performance is somewhat bland and unappealing; it's entertaining for a while, but it's too much sugar and not enough substance. I guess that summed up reason #2 why the film is overrated.

Didn't the boyfriend's drinking problem bother anyone else? Yes, I think it was made quite clear that the guy had a *problem*. But the issue was neither cleared up or resolved. If they were only to address it for dramatic purposes and not bring any sort of resolution to it at all..then why use that plot device in the first place?

I suppose I delved into the biggest issues to do with this film. Anything else that escapes me at the moment was probably too little a matter anyway. But it goes without saying that there are minor details which make Raise your Voice even less appealing and more appalling.

P.S: This movie just fails miserably in trying to encompass too much. It borrows from so many other plots and fails to deliver in any of them 100%/
-->If you want to see a movie about a younger sister who deals with her older brother's death, just watch: "Looking for David's Heart".
-->If you want to watch a movie about a small town girl chasing her stardom dreams and falling in love (God, there's too many to name), I think one of the originals was "Two Tickets to Broadway" with Janet Leigh. For a cheaper version go see Crossroads, or heaven forbid Glitter. [For extra points, if you want to see a relatively "small" town girl making it Big..and with the added bonus of stage fright (much like Duff's character) watch Coyote Ugly.]
-->If you were moved by the relationship between student and teacher, then there's like 200 films to see..but all right, teeny bopper-ish..Mona Lisa Smile?
-->If you feel like seeing a movie about a girl who struggles to build her future and go against the odds to make it to a school, I recommend the TV movie "Homeless to Harvard".
--> If you want to see a movie which highly stereotypes every teen character in it and makes their performances and lives to be highly cliche and predictable..watch ANY Molly Ringwald movie from the 80s.
-->If what got you hooked where all the "Star" cameos..then you might as well watch "Mars Attacks!". Worst movie ever, but boy does it have an A List of protagonists.

Amen, Dagger Angel. I love it when people give good critiques like yours. I agree with you completely, so it would be useless to express my opinion, as I would just be repeating what you've already said.

Instead, I would like to address the people who keep talking about Hilary's money. That has no relevance to the topic AT ALL. And telling people who differ in opinion that they'll never have the amount of money she has is an extremely crude and stupid way of saying that person is wrong. Money is in no way a measure of talent.

Ok. Some of you guys need to stop saying that she is a great singer, cause shes not- at all. Haven't you guys heard of digital voice editing? It edits her voice to make it sound better. And if you didn't notice the digitized Hilary singiing voice than you need bigger Tv speakers- or a hearing aid. I'm not trying to say shes a bad singer, shes actually okay, she just can't reach those high notes real well. And before you guys say I have no clue what I'm talking about, I'm going to say that I played Cosette in Les Miz on Broadway (Before that I played young Cosette). Ya know, that play that Ashley Tisdale was in? Well, anyways, I think Hilary Duff is an okay actress, and maybe in a few years she'll be more respected in Hollywood.
