I hate this movie AND I know about existentialism.

Existentialism is boring. In fact it's the most useless philosophy I know of, in my opinion. Who cares if we are all connected; are we all supposed to be happy and have sex with each other now? What matters, and listen to me now, is what we make out of it - the fact that we are all connected. Just because the philosophy has a fancy name doesn't mean we have to freak out. I choose to not care.

This movie is shallow. It is not deep. I'm in the middle of a marathon right now including Trainspotting, Amelie, Garden State, some Quentin Tarantino - and then this suddenly slaps me in the face with its boredom and normalcy.

This is - and I mean this in the most insulting way possible - the most normal movie I've seen.

Your right existentialism must be crap because the idea that i am connected to you makes me sick to my stomach. I Hate you and ill tell you why. The way you worded everything and expressed yourself sounded exactly like someone who is *beep* and i do mean *beep* in a scientific way. You say that "were all connected, so what"?, and i say WTF....You know nothing of history and philosophy so i don;t know what you are talking about. Go crack your head open and die slowly you moronic *beep* Your life is worthless and i would kill you myself if you mattered enough.

You see i shouldnt say that or feel that way, but in your worldview, we are not connected. Therefore, you dont matter to me and your life and welfare is non of my concern. Im sure your not connected with nature either, so why protect it. It just provides everything you need to survive but-*beep* it, WHo cares. Seriously WTF could you do with knowing your mother and brother and respecting them after all, what can you do with that ? *beep* it, who cares right.

Think MORON! You care about your family and friends and protect them because they are apart of you. Now imagine if the world was apart of you, wouldnt you treat it better and protect it? Maybe not cause your a Moron, but if you weren't couldnt you see the possibility of that. But like you said "what can you do with existentialism?" its only one of the most important philosophies that is being proven through Quantum Mechanics, but What use does Quantum Mechanic have?

Anyways hope you eat nails and feel it rupture you esophagus inch by agonizing inch till you cant ever speak again, saving us all from your non existential self. Your out of the Global family Biatch

I like this movie because it makes me feel good.
If our existance is pointless, at least let me accept it so I can enjoy myself.

Also, what – and I mean this in the most insulting way possible – what is the most unnormal movie you've ever seen? :) :P

reply

Yikes, this movie has the most defensive fans i've seen! I have to see it now :)

Wow, don't know what I think about the film yet, but checking out this thread as it starts - I have to say it is the most pretentious I have yet to read on IMDb. Not sure what point everyone thinks is lacking from existence. It is an immediate experiential phenomenon. The point is to appreciate its sheer magnificence and the sheer mystery of existence. How is that pointless - every other possible "point" imaginable pales into insignificance by comparison. Will not explore the word existentialism, which has so many subjective meanings raging from Kierkergaard's distinctly religious "leap of faith" in Fear and Trembling, to Sartre's atheistic musings in Existentialism and Humanism. Instead, I wonder what everyone thinks this strangely absent point could be - striving for objectives like rats in a maze? Being given prizes along the way in the form of status or wages? All of these activities may well be utterly meaningless, but appreciating the moment without such cravings seems to me a respectable and tangible point in itself. But then I had the sense to drop out of a philosophy degree to explore acid instead - most life affirming decision I have ever made. So maybe the point for now is to just enjoy the film, and stop spouting the kind of teenage angsty crap synonymous with most of those who obsess over this somewhat overrated school of thought and just enjoy the film, or watch something else. Trust I've made my point :D

Jesus, what a pointless discussion...bloody utilitarians. (to be honest it sounds like it nicked its general conceptual basis from Dirk Gently's Holistic Detective Agency to be honest, but doubt it will end up being a patch on anything Douglas Adams did)

Oh, and for the record - loved the film.

From your post you don't sound like you know about existentialism, stop trying to be arrogant and sound like a big man on an internet forum and read some books.

op is right. boring.

and, wow, i bet that WAS a huge noticeable contrast to hit the brakes with this movie just when you were in the middle of a good run with those titles you mentioned.

as i watched this lousy film, i kept thinking WTF WTF WTF and why? why? why?

and that the director made this whole film as a selfserving experiment to work out his own spiritual issues (or whatever).

it's just plain stupid. i agree.

(and i too am aware of all the pseudo philosophical junk people try to tag on this movie, and others. but it doesnt wash. just illustrates their real emptiness.

So are you saying that the film was made in "bad faith"?

Isn't the OP using his own individual, personal, and sum total of his being to critique his experience with 'I Heart Huckabees' and therefore using existentialism to define this film as normal?

...How boring of him.

I loved this film its one of my all time faves - I think you have to be a fairly relaxed individual to enjoy it though. Those who don't like it on here are quite aggressive, it obviously touches a nerve in them and they can't stand it. They can's stand it so much they would actually like to punch someone rather than hear these sorts of ideas being aired or enjoyed. Very sad, they will probably rule the world one day, loudmouth haters of ideas. Anybody would think there were loads of this type of film clogging up the cinemas by the way they react, instead of the usual 'entertainment' we have to make do with, which is so happy to treat everyone like morons - then one film comes out thats a bit different and even that isn't allowed to exist in their world...

I'm not totally sold on every aspect of this movie but Garden State was such an obvious pile of crap, I'm surprised you threw that in with all those other cinema-phile type films?
