I'll say it again - Koreans are the best in film making

Be it...a romantic story
Horror...
Drama...
Action..
Comedy...
All of them are good. Some may think i'm crazy but I have to say it.
I'm very impressed. VERY. Koreans have a way of making the scene..(how do i put it).. extra special. The screenplay!!
It's been a while since my last korean movie, and then I caught 'Memories Of Murder'...and I'm still amazed by the talent from this region of the world!
The actors...the directors...the writers...the cinematographer...the soundtrack!
Well..just feel like saying my piece here, a few minutes after just finishing the movie just now! :)

I third that!

To me, Korea is the 2nd greatest film producer after Hollywood...
I'm sure if you gave them the time and money, they WILL at least be on par with Hollywood....

I hope so. Sadly, Hollywood flicks surpass even the Korean box office. The man I interned under when I was in Korea was a film producer, and he ultimately left his job for venture capitalism. I met him again back in Winter during my visit back, and he told me that the Korean film industry is falling tremendously behind. Most of the romance flicks nowadays reuse the old formula, and fail to attract large audiences to it. His last/recent production of a movie was for the film about the Gwangju demonstration was one of his few successes. It's apparently a very hard road for aspiring Korean filmmakers atm.

Are you kidding? Hollywould has churned out little more than cr*p remakes and rip-offs for ages. Several countries come much higher up the totem pole in my book now.

Did you ever notice that people who believe in creationism look really un-evolved?

I agree. Problem is, not many of them come to America, and if they do they aren't usually advertised very well.

I've seen:
Salinui Chueok
Gwoemul
Tae Guk Gi
Swiri

Are there any more must-see Korean movies you can point me towards?

Well, I'm not saying that Korean films are always better than films from anywhere else. But the very small sample of Korean films I've seen were above par. Obviously, if I saw as many films from Korea as I do from Hollywood, I'd probably get a better idea of of the relative merits.

Thanks for the suggestion. I'll check that one out next chance I get.

I've A LOT of Korean films....and I don't think this statement is true.

Films like Oldboy, Mr. Vengeance, and Memories of Murder might have clouded your logic. These films only comes out once in a blue moon....it's rare.

Korea makes crappy movies just like Hollywood, although their share of crappy movies might be less.

If you think Hollywood are cliche and always have a set formula, then so do Korean films...you see enough and you will know.

Korean films have great production, so they all look like Hollywood products. I feel that sometimes they are just trying too hard.

I think the country that is most creative, most detailed in making their films work is Japan....their films are usually dramas...but they're extremely good at it.

some koreans are good at making films, they do produce a lot of garbage too
i don't know if i would go as far as saying they are "the best"

reply

not really related to this topic...
but for anyone who liked this film, i recommend you to watch 'the chaser' that came out this year. ('choo gyeok ja' or something in korean)
damn.... this movie is nearly as enjoyable as 'the memories of murder'

God no, The Chaser is annoying, stupid and pointless, Memories of Murder is smart and well made in every aspect.

As for the other debate, no point saying which industry is "the best" because everyone likes different things. Korea is one of my favorites for sure, even that they got a bit slow in the last couple of years. Also, the last truly good american film i saw was is more than 10 years old. I was going to say Grizzly Man but that one was made by a german director.

To be more specific, the USA as a whole can produce very good films, it's hollywood the one saturating the market with crap.

Korean films don't have as big of a budget, so have to rely on good acting, screenplay and orginal storyline, which is why I prefer Korean films to Hollywood ones. I think Hollywood have gone crazy with special effects and have let the story telling side go to waste.

Better than who?

I'm the first one who recognizes how much the korean movies have increased its quality in the last 10 years, but there are many countries who makes good cinema. In Europe you have always France, Italy, Germany, Spain, UK, Russia, etc., producing wonderful movies. in Africa? in the past Algeria, right now only South Africa. In Asia? India, Iran, China, Japan. In The Americas (Besides Hollywood) there is Brazil, Mexico, Canada, Argentina making great films.

Is korean film industry at the level of the aforementioned countries? Not yet in most cases.
However I repeat, koreans filmmakers and movies are getting better with time and have produced already several excellent films.

BTW Watch out Thailand, over there they have started making very interesting flicks.

Lets be realistic here, every country has its share of good and bad movies.Of course there are some where the amount of bad movies are 99.9% of the case, like Indian movies.I recently started watching Korean movies more frequently, and I have to say that I'm always surprised by the quality of film making in that country. But,I have to say that no other country can top American movies, even if a majority of them turn out to be nothing more than a cliched mess.Every year there are a few movies which totally wow you with their quality.Korean movies are definitely my second choice, with Brazilian movies coming a close third.
