What Do You Think The Ending Means when He's talking To The Girl?

I was half expecting the girl to say something like "He walked funny" at the end. The guy who had his leg amputated had some real issues.

Well, it goes to show that Park's method of trying to identify the murderer based on some special looks or his eyes was in vain as the murderer looked just like any other person.

Also, yes, since they never figured it out, the director can't really claim that the person looked like this or that, so saying he looked "ordinary" is saying he could be anyone amongst us.

I thought the ending tied back to the opening scene very nicely. The message seems to be that we often feel confident in what we think we see and know, but in reality, we don't see what's really there. The very first scene with the boy in the field--you don't see the bug on the plant at first, but then when the boy reaches for it, you realize it's been there the whole time.

In the same way, this scene at the end reiterates to the detective that the murderer was likely in front of him the whole time; however, unlike the bug, he never got that clue to actually find him. It reminds me of one of those 3D images where you have to focus in a particular way to see what's really there. I would always get frustrated knowing that something was there but not being able to actually see it.

After all these years the murderer still visits the same place. Others have already answered that but I will give my interpretation of staring into camera. That stare was my DP for 3 yrs, and to this day I still cant shake that image from my head. The stares of detective Park told their failures despite giving it everything, one detective losing leg, unable to save girl(last one), boy beaten in custody getting killed.

The question those stares raised to me was - You were with us both all along, saw what we went through, saw wasting our carrier behind this case, saw us through tragedies, saw us failing, and just saw murderer not only alive bit and yet we cant him. The stare was that of a cry and failure for not solving case.

This is something you will realize once your career is over. If you have seen Godfather 3's ending it will make sense. For me that ending has been the best ending of a movie and Memories of Murder is my all time favorite, and I am not even korean.
