How good would Mike Eruzione have fared had he played in the NHL?

He retired from competitive ice hockey after the 1980 Olympics (despite a contract offer from the New York Rangers) because he felt that he had already reached the pinnacle of achievement already. And he later said that he didn't regret deciding not to play professional hockey saying "after being a commentator and covering the NHL for a few years, I have no doubt I could play."

I don't entirely understand how winning the gold medal at the Olympics is the "pinnacle of achievement" for a hockey player. Don't get me wrong, the "Miracle on Ice" was probably the biggest upset in sports history and the most famous ice hockey game ever played. It was one of those inspirational, once in a lifetime moments that clearly transcended its sport. But I would imagine that besides winning the gold medal, the biggest achievement that a hockey player would want is to win the Stanley Cup.
