Did this destroy the reverence for the 1970s/1980s Superman?

It seems like the Christopher Reeve Superman movies were held to such high regard before Superman Returns as if no one could ever make superhero movies on the same level as those first two films and as if they were among the greatest movies of all time, but after Superman Returns, that era of Superman seems to have been forgotten about or at least not held to same “deification” as it was before. Did Superman Returns, trying to connect itself too closely to those previous films, destroy their legacy?

No.

No. In fact it bolstered their appeal.

Man Of Steel was the film that tainted Superman.

Superman IV didn't. Why would this? I mean, that was pretty bad. Laughably bad. It gave us wall repair laser vision.

I've never believed bad sequels somehow ruined the good movies.
