I understand that this is loosly based on some characters from "Whisper of The Heart", should I watch that film first, ive been waiting to see it, as its not out in Australia yet, but "The Cat Returns" is out.
hmmmm, i guess it's a matter of personal preference but i would recommend seeing "whisper of the heart" first. It's much better (as most sequels are) and i suspect it'll put the second film in perspective.
There are two recuring characters from Whispers of the heart, and both films are set in Tama, but there is no actual relationship in terms of plot or story.
You can watch this film without even knowing that the other one exists. Whispers of the heart is also aimed at a slightly older audience because it is more emotionaly mature and less cutesy.
<Spoiler>
In Whispers of the heart, moon is just an ordinary house cat and the baron is just an ordinary statue, one of the character writes a story about him being alive but that makes up only a small part of the overally film.
<spoiler> i'd dare say the story shizuku writes is told in "neko no ongaeshi". of course it seems a lot diferent from what it was back in "mimi wo sumaseba / whisper of the heart" but it seems it was lapidated, just as it was supposed to be. and it'd be fun to know that we are actually watching the animation of sizuku's book "mimi wo sumaseba / if you listen closely". </spoiler> that said, i'd say you'd better watch "whisper of the heart" first. though i didn't. and it makes sense cronologically, if we put it that way. it'd also suggest a third movie, if you get what the second means the way i do.
Even if both were available at the same time it wouldn't make any difference which you see first. Hence, the earlier you can enjoy one of the tales, the better. I do believe, however, that Whisper of the Heart is a far superior story. I would have no problems with categorizing The Cat Returns as a cartoon, versus calling it an animated film.
I saw the cat returns before whisper of the heart... didn't really make a difference ...so i definitely wouldnt wait till whisper comes out till u see the cat returns (though that doesnt matter anymore since whisper of the heart came out nearly a month ago and this thread is nearly half a year old...)
I saw The Cat Returns before Whispers of the Heart and it didn't ruin my experience of any of the movies by any means. Both are excellent and enjoyable no matter which one you see first. As a matter of fact; when I started watching Whispers... I had no idea that the two movies were connected at all. Imagine my surprise when the storyline reached the antique shop & Baron!
I didn't even realise Cat Returns was a sequel 'til I just IMDBed it after watching it... so No I can't say it makes a difference! Some bits i Was like "eh thats a bit rushed" so I guess thats why, haha. another one to add to the list!
According to the myth, Shizuku wrote "The Cat Returns" after the story was completed in "Whisper of the Heart". Given my preference, I would see Whisper first, but I did see Cat Returns first and it didn't take anything away from Whisper.
watch whisper of the heart and never watch this, worst studio ghibli movie for me. some may like it, but it is too cliched for me, it is not very original, whisper of the heart had good story, and the scenery, artwork and location was just so beautiful. the baron from whisper of the heart is shown in the cat returns, but they have little similarity in their characterstics. so cat returns is a mediocre movie for me.
Yes, you should definitely see Whisper of the Heart first, instantly one of the best movies I've seen in such a long time. If you don't have a chance to see it on dvd cus you're in Australia, then you should go see it on veoh, you can watch it there for free. Cary Elwes does the voice of the Baron in both movies so you don't have to worry about that part at least. Haven't actually seen The Cat Return's as of right now but I plan on seeing it in the next couple of days. Btw, I know my comment may be way too late, but you definitely have to see Whisper of the Heart, whether its first or not may not matter but its such an awesome movie.
~whisper~ Do a barrel roll, do a barrel roll. ~whisper~
I watched The Cat Returns years ago before seeing Whisper of the Heart or even knowing they were related and still enjoyed it. I watched it again today after watching Whisper of the Heart yesterday and it was slightly better knowing the characters already but it didn't make much difference tbh.
