Anne Hathaway killed the movie!

I was really looking forward to watching this movie...but right when it started I felt alittle...awkward watching.

Anne Hathaway is a great actress - and I love her and have nothing against her, but her voiceover for the english dub was NOT good. The character of Haru and her voice and expressions just didn't match! And the movie itself annoyed me cause it was so rushed and not long enough.

Ahhhhh. Whyyy?! They could've made it at LEAST 20 minutes longer. Could've elaborated and took their time on some scenes in the movie. The plot was like:

haru saves cat
cat finds haru
haru is in castle
haru gets rescued
haru says bye

ELABORATION!!! !?!?!

What more did you want?!?!?!?!

Just becouse it did not go by the standard Hollywood 90 min rule dose not mean that is dosen't explaine everyhing? Try rewatching it.

I myself love it, a perfect movie to watch on a rainy weekend.

And Anne Hathaway's voice, could not be more perfect. I LOVE how her voice couldn't hold some notes, they wavered a little in some scenes, giving her a very human touch.

Oh my gosh, I thought Anne Hathaway was amazing, haha. I had prepared myself for a letdown when I found out that she was voice acting, but she definitely surprised me.

Two of the best moments were when she first rescued Prince Lune, just while he was leaving, & quickly bowed & said, "that's okay" very quickly. Ha, hilarious, haha. The other is when the tower is exploding & she screams out Baron's name. Her voice cracks & everything.

I agree, I thought Heru's (Anne's) voice was very real and human. It wouldn't have seemed as special if one of those high-pitched voice actresses did it. >_>

reply

There is a reason why the voice didn't exactly match the expression.
The movie was originally in Japanese. It is not easy to dub a movie in a different language. Plus this was her FIRST Voice over job.

reply

It wasnt amazing, but I thought she carried the film very nicely. One of the main reasons I even watched the movie was for her hehe.

I loved Anne in this. Her dramatic scenes made me laugh so hard. Her voice seems down to earth...

I cant imagine a better casting choice.

Yeah it does kinda suck with American voice I watch any Japaneses animated movie and the American voices just can never do it for me no matter what. But I thought the movie was pretty good. It wasn't meant to be long.

I can't comment on Anne Hathaway as I've only watched the subbed version however I disagree about the length, I think it is nice to have a selection of films of various lengths, I don't always have time to watch a long film, or don't want to stay up late, for those occasions The Cat Returns is ideal

I'm only going to say this once: stay out of Camberwick Green - Sam Tyler

Really? I honestly thought this was one of the best english dubs I've ever heard, largely due to Anne Hathaway (who I really don't know anything about). She was incredibly authentic.

I thought it was interesting that, if you watch the two special features about the making of the show, both Anne Hathaway and the Japanese voice actress both comment on the unusual amount of screaming they had to do as Haru. Hathaway didn't have anything on the Japanese woman's screaming though. Man, even the director asked her if she was ok afterwards (in the scene in the extra right before they eat the rice cakes).

reply

You actually watched it in english?

Why not japanese?

I don't pray, really, because I don't want to bore God.

reply

I'd have loved for the film to be longer, but I have a hard imagining how to go about that without taking away from, what I thought, was the already brisk pacing.

I liked Anne Hathaway in the movie. Only thing that kinda bugged me was Tim Curry as the king (too...'laid back surfer/stoner' sounding), but even than I couldn't help but crack a smile.
