Doing/Saying things like "If I ____ before ____ then ____ is ____"

Like when Mathilde would say things like "If I reach the bend before the car, Manech will come home alive."

I do that ALL the time. Just for fun. Not sure if i believe it...

i do it all the time i thought it was just me til i saw the movie it made me like her even more

reply

yeah, same here. But it never works for me

reply

Yeah, I think I rely on it too much, as well.

"If I finish my essay before seven, then I'll get an A."

the next day:

"FAIL?!?!?!?!?!"

i was actually very surprised when i saw her doing that in the film. something so small you don't really think other ppl do that stuff but you. so it made her character much more likeable, and human? if that makes any sense. it shows something so small, universal. it made me happy. but yes, i do that myself too.

reply

It makes perfect sense. I do it too (before seeing the film even though I was somewhat unaware of it). I think that it really says something about a person. Not just overly-hopeful which this movie makes Audrey Tautou's character out to be, but creative, open-minded, and spiritual. Definitely not stubborn. Mostly good characteristics that I can see, seeing as how I do it myself. But I could see someone with a different personality and perspective saying something about false hope and that it's stupid and pointless, which says a lot about them as well. Aside from that I definitely felt like it added a great deal of character to Mathilde, not just because I can relate, but because people do things like that and no one discusses it. It's such a personal thing that it just stays in our heads and we never think much about it. I'm sure that those that don't say, "if ______ before _________ then ______ is _______", can even relate to this in some way by talking to themselves in their head, or little superstitions, or something else personal to them, although they may not even realize it. And who knows, maybe Jean Pierre "the Genius" Jeunet has inspired those that don't to give it a try.

No, but it made me laugh and reminisce because when I was a kid, I'd do that ALL THE TIME! When I found out what OCD was in my teens I tried to stop before it took over my life :(

reply

I love that! I was sure I was the only person in the world who did it, but now I see there are many of us hopeful people. I loved the character of Mathilde from the beginning, but this aspect of her just made me like her even more. It really does humanize her. I love how this particular director makes characters in his movies have these distinctive characteristics which most of us have and had never admitted to.

haha yeah i did that too and apparently a lot of people still do it. i dont think its called 'being hopeful'though. more like OCD.

reply

Yeah, I do that all the time, I guess many people do that, is it really OCD or some other kind of disorder? Really curious. It used to be worse when I was younger, now not so much.

reply

I do it too. I don't think it's OCD cause i don't do it that often, I mostly do it when i'm walking somewhere by myself or doing something boring.

btw does it work for you guys cause it doesn't for me haha, i still do it though.

i actualy noticed that, and she always wins on the bet ryt?in a sort of twisted way. she said manech will be if she catches the car,and she did, but not manech's car. she said she will find manech if the ticket collector comes before the count of seven and the man did, but he was just fooling around. and so she foundmanech in a sort of twisted way.

Yep, I did this all the time as a child. I guess it's more common than I realized.
