It makes perfect sense. I do it too (before seeing the film even though I was somewhat unaware of it). I think that it really says something about a person. Not just overly-hopeful which this movie makes Audrey Tautou's character out to be, but creative, open-minded, and spiritual. Definitely not stubborn. Mostly good characteristics that I can see, seeing as how I do it myself. But I could see someone with a different personality and perspective saying something about false hope and that it's stupid and pointless, which says a lot about them as well. Aside from that I definitely felt like it added a great deal of character to Mathilde, not just because I can relate, but because people do things like that and no one discusses it. It's such a personal thing that it just stays in our heads and we never think much about it. I'm sure that those that don't say, "if ______ before _________ then ______ is _______", can even relate to this in some way by talking to themselves in their head, or little superstitions, or something else personal to them, although they may not even realize it. And who knows, maybe Jean Pierre "the Genius" Jeunet has inspired those that don't to give it a try.
