Shaun Evans
Was it just me, or was Shaun Evans' (who played Tom) American accent so bad it made Ewan McGregor look like a native-born? I was cringing every time he opened his mouth.

shareActually, I didn't even know he wasn't American until I watched the "making of" documentary on the dvd. Looking back on it after I heard his thick Scottish accent - it did sound a little forced. I have to give him kudos...I couldn't fake a Scottish accent no matter what. I'd sound like an idiot.
I know that Europeans think we (Americans) sound like we're chewing gum when we talk. It makes me laugh when I hear Brits and Irish fake an American accent b/c they really over-emphasize that part. It's good fun.

It's funny you say that. When I saw the movie, I could have sworn that he was American. But once I learned that he was European, I looked back and realized that he did flub it up, but only a couple of times.

I'm a German speaker. Funnily I wouldn't have thought of Shaun Evans not being American, whereas I could distinguish Annette Benings origin quite easily. (Well, of course I know she's American, so I had a slight advantage there.)
shareI had no idea who Shaun Evans was before seeing this movie so I thought his accent was very believable. He did ennuciate a bit too much but nothing too noticable.
shareIt was bad.. very bad. I'm an American who's lived in the UK for a year. I can now spot every phoney accent on TV. For some reason, British actors always lower their voice and speak through their nose in an odd way when imitating us Yanks. It's really funny.. and annoying. :-) I thought Annette Benning's accent was quite good and natural.
shareIt was pretty bad...I kept forgetting he was supposed to be American. Was this not important to the director?
You are what you love, not what loves you.

I was thinking that too. Not everyone's accent was the best, but his seemed really out of place.

I thought it was fine. And I think Ewan's is good too. Granted, very different from his normal voice. But I know what you mean about it seems as though their voices tank an octive or so. But I thought it was very believeable.
"Excuse me, are you the Judean People's Front?"
*beep* off! We're the People's Front of Judea!"
Actually, this is the first time I found out he isn't American. I thought he was fine. I mean, I did notice he had a VERY American accent, but I thought that was just part of the casting.
shareYeah I didn't know he wasn't American either until I came to this board. But I do remember thinking he sounded so American compared to the others. Figured it was just because his voice stuck out so much as being the only non-British voice. And it probably was.
