Why cut off her hands?

After the killer slashes the mother's throat in the bedroom, he then inexplicably takes the time to completely sever her hands. I figured there might some reason for this to be revealed later on, but it was never brought up again.

Was there any significance to the hand removal?

She was trying to use the phone to call for help - he cut off the hand that was holding the phone.

couldn't he have more easily cut the phone cord?
