Why are great horrormovies always so low imdb-rated

It is almost impossible to find a great horrormovie above 7.0 in imdb-rating.

Movies like this one, which I found to be extremely good.

Before getting the lust for horrormovies, I used the imdb-ratings as a guidance, and I usually would not watch movies below 7.0.

But when I got the urge for these movies, I have to find other sources for recommendation, or at least accepting a whole other spectrum of rating.

Its impossible for a gore-feast like this to get a high rating, but I wonder why the ones who score it down watches a movie like this. In the horror-genre it does not come much better than this, I think :)

Because while a lot of them have great atmosphere and set pieces, which is what most horror fans are looking for, they often make terrible storytelling and logistical decisions.

High Tension for instance - awfully good until the awful shoehorned ending that invalidates almost everything that came before it. I've heard all the arguments as to why it's still an okay ending and none of them stick - they just come off as poor defense of something fans want to like. This would've been one of my favorite horror films otherwise but I really just can't stand it. I also guarantee that if it had almost any other ending it probably WOULD be rated around an 8.

Well, in High Tension's case, a lot of people think the twist utterly ruins the movie. Thus the low-rating

really?! I gave it 1/10.. only because I couldn't rate it lower!
Cheesy performances, unbelievable trivial story!

A waste of time!
(with the knowledge that I'm a horror fan, but this one is really really bad!)

It has a low "IMDb-rated" is because movies like this make people uncomfortable. Even for some horror fans, "High Tension" crosses there line about what should be in movies.
