Ok so My top 5 Horror movies are ones that scare me. Even with repeated viewings I still get chills and have trouble being alone afterwards or even leaving the bedroom to use the bathroom, lol. So that's my criteria for Top horror...I"m not big into gore, I dont mind it but I just don't find it particularly scary or horrific (usually looks fake to me).
1. Candyman - This movie will always and forever scare the crap out of me. I had to sleep in my parents room for months after I saw this and STILL have trouble walking by the bathroom when the lights aren't on.
2. When A Stranger Calls - This story is just terrifying. However I prefer the remake because I didn't find the "stranger" in the original scary...some old english dude? lol. The remake is much scarier because it focuses on the scariest part of the story (the phone calls, being alone in a strange place, etc) and that house is totally creepy with that freaky art. Brilliant use of dark/shadows.
3. Jeepers Creepers - I'm actually pretty embarrassed to say this one, lol. BUT it utterly creeps me out. The whole mood of the movie. The creature itself is not even that scary, idk what it is but this movie always scares me. Maybe that they're isolated and no one will help them and they're sort of trapped.
4. The Descent - I'm somewhat claustrophobic and somewhat afraid of the dark. Enough said.
5. Session 9 - Majorly creepy. Being in a big, old, dark, abandoned mental institution...*shudder*
Stylistically speaking, I'd go with the Hellraiser movies. While I don't find them particularly scary I think they're extremely imaginative and entertaining. Very different from the other franchises.
ill admit that movies dont really 'scare' me and never really have with the exceptions of The Shining and the first time i watched Poltergiest (when i was 6), but its my favorite genre and there are always the rememberable scenes that can kinda creep me out because i enjoy letting myself really 'get into' the movies (if its good enough, lol). anyways, heres my 5 favs/best:
1. The Shining (still just plain frightening)
2. Return of the Living Dead (the best of all zombie movies that were ever made)
3. Pan's Labrynth (might be more of a fantasy movie, but damn that blind man was one of the best monsters)
4. Hellraiser (classic gorefest where the gore is actually related to the story)
5. Texas Chainsaw Massacre: The Beginning (this is one of my favorite 'new horror' movies with the exception of the last 5 mins, the worst ending to such a great thrill ride through insanity)
now, my favorites change from time to time, but these are the 5 that i feel are solid movies that will never get old. i might come back and have a different top 5 another day.
For me...
1. Halloween (1978 original)
2. 28 Days Later
3. 28 Weeks Later
4. The Bunker
5. Poltergeist
1. A Nightmare on Elm Street
2. Halloween
3. Scream
4. Hellraiser 2
5. The Evil Dead
Note: technically it's 6, because I also consider the remake to be the same as the original.
1. The Blair Witch Project
2. The Thing
3. The Fog
4. The Texas Chain Saw Massacre
5. Stigmata
The Saw Is Family
