Why doesnt Charlotte ever wear pants

Every single scene in the movie where Charlotte is in her apartment she is pantless. It seems so unimportant to the plot, yet adds a level of unnecessary sexualization to her character.

It kept me watching the movie. Otherwise, I found it pretty boring.

reply

It kept you watching, but almost pushed me away from a movie I otherwise loved. Different people react different ways to things like that.

Exactly. I never even noticed what she was or wasn't wearing.

Perhaps you were aroused and are striking out due to shame. You need not worry. There is no shame. It's completely natural.

reply

Lots of girls wear nothing but underwear when alone. At least they did in my college dorm.

I had friends like you at one point.

Then I graduated high school.

I know you've had a rough time.

reply

It's not a flat, it's a hotel room. Why should she bother being dressed ? You see sexualization where there is none and she is wearing rather plain underwear, nothing remotely sexy.

reply

Do you constantly wear pants in your apartment / hotel room? I don't.

By my deeds I honor him, V8

reply

Not me. The pants come off as soon as I walk in the door. Takes me forever to answer the door because I don't want to flash anyone. Could be the girl scouts selling door-to-door and just like that I have to register as a convicted sex offender for the rest of my life.

(It was in Bill Murray's contract.)

Look, she's depressed, I know the feeling. It's hard enough to get out of bed, let alone showering or changing chlothes. Not a doubt in my mind that they're the same panties as yesterday's.

I'm in bed in my underware, eating chocolate-caramel candies at 430 am. Take sleeping pills, but still awake. In my case, however, "Came the Dawn*", I at least have another room to go to, so sweatpants keep my neighbors from seeing my undies. Charlotte only has the one room, so get outta bed and "go to the window"** is all she's got for a little while.

AT LEAST SHE CAN SMOKE stupid other boards!

I prefer the toad less raveled.

I hear you loud and clear. Take care

reply

Unnecessary? Possibly.

Welcome? Absolutely.

Whose idea was it for the word "Lisp" to have an "S" in it?

reply

She is trying to not only decide who and what she is in life, she has low self esteem and it makes her feel "sexy" or "attractive". Plus, I also felt she was trying to get attention from her HUSBAND, and he was ignoring her. So she found attention "elsewhere" from Bob.

This is a very good explanation.

The opening shot is just a visual homage to a thematically similar Godard film.

And really, the movie was written and directed by a woman, so it's not some dirty old man director trying to get his rocks off.

reply

I totally get not wearing pants when you're chilling at home (or at least a hotel room). I also get feeling depressed, neglected, like life is passing you by.

And... the many, many shots of Charlotte and her knees staring out at the Tokyo skyline started feeling copy-pasted after a while. Wait, I take that back. Some shots consisted of knees and their Charlotte staring out at the Tokyo skyline. What a twist!
