Who else could have played Dewey??

Every time I watch SOR I marvel at Jack Black's performance as Dewey. I know that he and Mike White were friends and White wrote the part with Black in mind, but if that wasn't the case who else could have possibly pulled it off? Who could have been as funny, loathsome, lovable, musical and crazy like Black? I am drawing a complete blank on this one...

reply

No one else could've done it, because the character (and film as a whole) was literally custom-made for Black. Every line, every scene, every piece of punctuation in the script was designed with Black's very unique comedic persona in mind.

So if any other actor did it, they'd just be doing a Jack Black impression.

reply

Yeh, it was a role custom made for black, especially with his singing and knowledge for music. He was perfect

Although I do think Sean William Scott could've pulled it off.

reply

Jack Black was perfect for the role, but I could some how see David Duchovny pulling it off.

Russell Brand

"I have heard the mermaids singing, each to each.
I do not think that they will sing to me."

The only other person I can imagine being Dewey is Philip Seymour Hoffman. They're very similar, in my opinion. Hoffman is just more flexible

reply

Agreed. Philip Seymour Hoffman was first who came to mind when I saw this thread.

Jason Lee.

Philip Seymour Hoffman played a similar role in Almost Famous. He could play a good Dewey.

reply

Jim Carrey

I agree Jim Carrey could have done a pretty good job. He has experience working with kids, though I'm not sure if he could do the whole "rocker" image/look. Who knows?

reply

Dave Hill - he is definitely the only person who could do this justice IMO

I doubt if anyone else could have. The character was written with particularly Jack Black in mind. Plus he had to be a good singer.
