Jack Black performing with the kids bothered me.

I thought the band should have played without him. It kind of ruined it for me and took away from the kids performance, IMHO. They could have rocked it without him.

What kind of dorky answer is that?

I just hated their rude behavior at the concert, throwing tantrums when they didn't win, and then the stupid audience and parents shouting the winners off the stage.

reply

Nobody threw a tantrum!
They were very stoical and completely accepted it- saying that winning wasn't important, playing was.
Only Dewey was a little bit despondent, but the kids cheered him up!!
They were asked to do an encore... So they did! The crowd liked them better than the winners.

It would have missed the point if he didn't. The reason Dewey did what he did was to find himself a new band to play with. Why would he have bailed out at the end? It wasn't a school project. I'm sure the kids were happy to play with him since he taught them everything they know about rock, he was their leader. And they didn't have another vocalist who could match his raw enthusiasm.

Zach told him that he agrees on performing his song only if Dewey sings it, so it makes complete sense.

Lunchbox-3 hit it right on the head! He was the captain of the epic journey

to the OP ,,apparently u missed the entire point and humor of the film.. He wanted to start a new band, he wasnt a school teacher teaching a band class , he wanted to be in the Band ..... Geez Lighten up..

reply

I agree. The mix of a kids band but with one adult singer kinda ruined the chemistry, they'd have been a kick ass all-kids band and it would have made more sense stylistically. However, the plus side was that Jack Black is a great vocalist and probably a better rock singer than any kid in the band.

reply

I can see where the OP is coming from, but let's face it, Jack Black is the star of the movie and really wasn't a teacher coaching a band.

reply

They could have rocked it without him.

They would have, but the point of the movie is that he wanted to form a new band.

reply

But his character IS immature and fond of the limelight - it makes perfect logic that he would place himself centre-stage!

reply

That was the best part of the movie, watching Dewey actually rock out and not suck at it. If anything it highlighted the kids performances.

reply

He was the main character, and the movie centers on his redemptive arc. He had to be there. It’s symbolic how he successfully dives in the crowd at the end when he failed to do so in the opening; it represents how he developed by the end.
