this film was great fun, a real joy to watch, and harisson ford hasnt been better fr years, some good action, funny dialogue, what is there not to like. along with 2fast2furious,last action hero and the avengers, these are some of the most underated movies by both critics and box office receipts. ps. i was joking about avengers
I don't understand why so many reviewers seem to hate it so much. I thought this was supposed to be The Age of Irony, and this is sure as hell an ironic movie.
I also agree with you... I really enjoyed this film. It is definitely underated. While not an Oscar winner, this movie was funny with interesting dialogue and action scenes. Harrison Ford did a good job playing a cop/real estate broker.
The plot is a bit flimsy and at times it takes some very weird turns (I mean, the double interrogation rooms scene was totally over the top), but a charming pic nevertheless.
I disagree. 48 Hours lost me after Nolte gave his gun to the criminal. Talked to a guy who spent 25 years on the Michigan State Police. He told me that cops are instructed to never, ever, ever, ever, ever, ever, ever, ever under any circumstances give up their gun like that. Once you do, you are wholly at the criminal's mercy.
I liked this movie because of the humor element and the statement it makes about the music industry. Reminds me of how Toni Braxton filed for bankruptcy after learning from her accountant that her record label was keeping someting around 85 cents of every dollar she earned.
The reason that this film is universally panned is, it is simply *not* funny. We can talk all day about why, but there is very little humor in this flick.
I believe that Ford has the ability to do comedy. One of my favorite movies is Six Days Seven Nights, but that movie was *funny*.
Another poster really hit the nail on the head; he said that the premise *itself* is not humorous, and he is right. No one finds cops moonlighting hilarious. As a matter of fact it is rather disconcerting, to think that a cop would use his/her FREE TIME on real estate ventures, or yoga training.. right. We want cops that are using their free time to blow off steam, or work old cases that everyone else believes are unsolvable - not out trying to sell rappers a new house. It isn't funny, it is sad. The fact that we can't pay our most important public servants enough money so that they don't have to go scrounging around to make ends meet is a very sad situation, it is not funny, and it never will be.
The flaw isn't Ford's, and I would even venture to say that it is not the fault of even the director, instead it is the fault of the screenwriter, the studio and the chump that came up with the idea.
There is nothing underrated about this film, it is rated quite accurately. Ask yourself this question... when you watch this film: do you, or do you not feel some kind of strange depression? I have discussed this with other people and most have agreed that - even if they like the movie - there is a strange feeling that we all share; call it depression, call it uneasiness, call it sadness that comes from the realization that we - the richest nation on earth - cannot pay our policeman/women what they deserve. Whatever you call it... it is sad, not funny.
"We want cops that are using their free time to blow off steam, or work old cases that everyone else believes are unsolvable - not out trying to sell rappers a new house."
Hmm, why should i care on how a cop is releasing his anger/stress? Why shouldnt he do Yoga or sell houses?
By the way, a cop who is looking after old cases in his FREE TIME??? Are you out of your mind? nothing of the work of a cop should EVER be brought into your personal free-time.
A cop nearly earns nothing, so why shouldnt he sell houses to rap-stars in his free time? The movie was a little exaturating, taking business-phonecalls during police work thats not funny. The rest is near to real life than you might want to imagine.
It obvious that you don't know jack squat about cops. I do, and I can tell you that those with a gold shield are *constantly* working cold cases in their spare time. It is a very real hobby, a serious passion for many.
You misunderstood what I meant though, I don't care what a cop does in his spare time, but when you make a movie about it, I certainly don't want it to be yoga or selling houses, ya dig? As I said before, and the box office receipts prove, *no one* wants to see that.
I'm sorry, but I have to say that I found this movie quite amusing, at least entertaining to the degree where I felt it wasn't a waste of time to watch. and I have good taste in movies... seriously.
but I think it comes down to personal prefference... also i had low expectations
Usually, I like to back up my opinion, but I totally agree with this post. This movie was *horrible*... and should never have been made. I think Ford took this for the fat paycheck. Ron Shelton should have known better.
You forgot the name of the movie: Hollywood... it is about money/fake/dreams/mansions/crimes investigations as routine... it is about the mixing of interests in LA... and it is the opposite of this movies with heroic cops, who live their job and have no personal life. In Hollywood Homicide you get a cop who has other things to do besides looking for a criminal. He is trying to get a life, a girlfriend, a better bank account... while he eats sandwiches in crime scenes... I know it is not your idea of a cop and it can be sad to give up illusions... and we are so used to Ford as a hero... well he is an anti-hero in Hollywood Homicide, just an average guy. And he does a great job. The bad thing about this movie is not the plot, nor Ford, it is the edition and details like the poor done end that really is what stays in the memory: the end doesn't make any sense.
"It's all about small stuff. You know, small lies, small mistakes."
I'm curious. When did you decide to become a police officer? How did you get through training? What formal education is required? If you can't answer these question then shut your hole next time.
I'm *not* a cop, DullEdge! Try paying attention, rather that spouting off at the cake hole!
Most cops, by the way, require at least an Associates degree in Law Enforcement...
I have about FIVE friends who are cops, two with a gold shield, and they don't do real estate and yoga in their spare time. They work COLD CASES, and (at the MOST) do side jobs like security and sometimes the odd venture to make money. They are VERY busy as cops, and being a cop isn't a "job" it is a LIFE.
So... why don't you read what I write next time, instead of using your sassy-ass mouth to create things for me to say. In other words, try to follow along with the adults and act as all naughty children should... which is to be seen and NOT heard!

Another dorko that jumps into a long gone cold stream to stir up trouble and again, misses the point. Go make your own stream and drum up this crap. What you don't know about cops I could pretty much fit in the Grand Canyon.
"...nothing is left of me, each time I see her..." - Catullus
Another dork that jumps into a long cold thread and offer a wonderful gem. When you reach 18 you can talk to the adults. Until then, your mother wants the computer back.

You guys are far to critical just enjoy it for what it is, a hillarious movie. I never thought I would see a day that Harrison Ford rides a pink barbie bike down the srteets of Hollywood.
I liked this film, because Harrison Ford doesnt take himself too seriously into it. I believe Ron Shelton's movie was an allegory to the hip hop killings of Tupac Shakur and Biggie Smalls (Notorious B.I.G.) by a rival hip hop producer (Shug Knight?). This could have been a very taut, tight, urban thriller, but I think they threw in comedy instead. There very underlying matter - it was rumored that the L.A.P.D. were hired hands on the killing of Notorious. They were "moonlighting" as bodyguards for hip hop entourages so they could be placed in key areas. (see Nick Broomfield's documentary), Biggie and Tupac. Its very compelling. This film actually had very serious undertones and could be seen as a follow up to Dark Blue, with Kurt Russell. Real life is so ripe with film scripts, isnt it?
Bladerunner.......this is a film remember, so wot if it shows cops selling houses and doing yoga in their spare time, it aint showin what cops really do in their spare time, thats the point, thats why its sposed to be funny.
Very heavy opinion. As much as I hate the acronym "IMHO", your post really really needed it.
"We want cops that are using their free time to blow off steam, or work old cases that everyone else believes are unsolvable - not out trying to sell rappers a new house. It isn't funny, it is sad."
That has got to be a joke. Mega naive much? Thirteen years old much? And there was nothing sad about it. I think you kind of missed a few things.
I wasn't depressed. This is one of my favorite comedy movies. Hell, if that's what it would really mean to be a cop, I would definitely consider it. If we would pay cops too much that would turn into a big corrupt fest. Many people who get paid a lot are greedy bastards without any sence of moral values and would rape there own sister for two pennies (politicians, managers). This is a good way to ensure you get cops who want to be cops, to serve and protect, not for the money.

You might want to read that comment again. Actually, if cops were paid more money they'd be LESS likely to be corrupt ie. take bribes. Doesn't that make more sense?
This is a funny movie! It has some lulls but the scene alone of Harrison Ford stealing a girl's bicycle and screaming at her while pursuing Antoine Sartain (Isaiah Washington) was worth the price of admission! Just to see Harrison do something like that had me turning red! The film also was fun to watch for all the cameos. I mean how often will you have the chance to see Harrison Ford, Master P, Martin Landau, AND Frank Sinatra, Jr. all sitting at the same table in a movie having lunch together!
Guess most posters haven't seen too many movies. I mean comparing this to '48 Hours?' Could this movie have used more cliches? Thru most of the last hour, I was predicting what was happening before it appeared onscreen. This seems to be a sympathy movie for Ford. We know you're over 50, but we'll still let you do car chases, run thru the streets (or ride a kid's bike), and beat up hip-hop gangstas half your age. I really didn't get Hartnett's character. Not even his hair. Usually, I don't care about hairstyles (especially men's) but his was ridiculous! WhatUp?!? The part about him trying to avenge his father worked, but the rest - the yoga and acting seemed forced. The last 15-20 minutes with the simultaneous chases and the TV stations helicopters was pathetic. Underrated, don't think so. _____________________________________ Did Bobaloo and Lowell co-opt the rewrite for this?
Yeah, I think they were kind of going for 70's retro cop show. Hence the title "Hollywood Homicide" it's almost as it was a psuedo Cop t.v. show. the "weary veteran" and the "groovy" new age rookie cop run into all sorts of mischief! catch it Friday's at 8 on A B C !
I am a huge Ford fan but this film is not underrated. It is pretty poor, not very funny (although Ford is good at times) and far too long. Ford is good and it improves once his relationship with Lena Olin begins but it never becomes a truly good film. This is truly not a film I would see again. Ford's poorest since the 1970's - K:19 was not popular but is an excellent film - this film was unpopular for a reason.
If there are truly no redeeming qualities in this film, then why did it get "two thumbs up"? I'll bet Roger Ebert knows a bit more about movies than most anyone here. I'm four decades old but I agree with the youngsters here, the movie had a few hilarious moments and I thoroughly enjoyed it from start to finish.
While its fair to say Hollywood Homicide isn't that bad, its possible the reason you think so many bad films are good is that you have a different view to many on what constitutes a good film. Though at least you concede The Avengers. This is not a critism, viva la differance, hell I like Cannonball Run, although it is a bad movie.... Do you like Johnny Neuronic???
