Basically a modern adaption of Hansel and Gretel

People think this movie is similar to Alice in Wonderland but I think this movie is very similar to Hansel and Gretel.

SIMILARITIES:

- A child is neglected by her parents
- The child plans to escape their neglectful parents
- An animal leads them to a strange place
- In the strange place, everything is better and there is a loving maternal figure that feeds the child well and provides them entertainment
- The maternal figure turns out to be evil and wants to eat the child
- The child tries to escape the maternal figure's home but fails
- The child tricks the maternal figure so that they could trap them inside their own homes, where they eventually die

i only have a vague understanding of alice in wonderland but isnt the plot all a blur, nothing significant really happens, just a series of events. As for the comparison between hansel and gretel and coraline, Coraline's evil mother only deceived her once she came to realisation that she didnt really want the things that she offered. While hansel and gretel, the mother was never a loving character and just wanted to get rid of the kids. Hence at the conclusion of the story, there really isnt a fairy tail ending, but rather they just escape the witch. On the contrary, coraline just resorts back to her previous life with a new attitude.

It's more similar to Hansel and Gretel.

God forbid that it’s not similar to
ANYTHING and is, in fact, unique. Because that is what this is.

Sheesh. Sheeple!

You're right--this is an incredibly unique film. Dazzlingly imaginative and creative. I love it.

Still, I'm not sure that precludes it from comparisons to other stories.

I personally never considered the similarities to Hansel & Gretel, but I think the OP makes some fair comparisons. Your defensively crying "Sheeple!" over an individual offering their take seems unnecessarily harsh. This is a film discussion board, after all.
