So are they robots or just brainwashed?

This movie makes no sense. It first tries to imply that the wives are replaced by robots (woman used as ATM machine), then at the end Nicole Kidman's character discovers they've just been brainwashed by a microchip (or something like that?) inserted in their brain. So which is it? It's like the writer forgot what storyline he was using and changed his mind halfway through.

The reason this is so confusing is because clearly the original intention was to kill off the wives and replace them with robots, like the original. As has been reported, many rewrites and new scenes were put into the movie to please test audiences who I imagine didn't care for all these women to be killed off. So they rewrote it so that it was just a chip in the brain to alter the behaviors of the women...but couldn't reshoot the whole movie..so there are a ton of inconsistencies like the atm machine wife, or faith hill flipping out and sparking, etc. It was a mess of a movie that shouldn't have seen the light of day in the shape it is in. It makes no sense the way it is.

I'm confused by everyone's confusion. The women were clearly cyborgs, ala Jamie Sommers (the Bionic Woman). In the film's case, the only organic material appears to have been the brain as we saw the complete body when they went below deck.

that's all part of the film making disaster this movie was.
