more series like this please

could anyone give me recommendation about more series like this? series that involves someone with power, magic, etc.
I love Heroes (even it's not the same kind of power with carnivale, but there're power involved), altough the last season was kinda boring, but i still disappointed when they cancelled it.
anything with power, magic, mantra, spell, super power, anything will do. thanks

Maybe check out Twin Peaks. While not similar in terms of plot content to Carnivale, the overall mythology and atmospheres of the shows I found comparable. There isn't really any 'superpowers', but it has things like entities/spirits, doppelgangers, characters having the same dreams, and just general, otherworldly strangeness on top of a great ensemble cast of memorable characters. It's a fantastic show (I've read some people think the acting is cheesy, or its soap opera-ish at times, but I think it fits with the whole charm of the show, and possibly even intentional). It's on Netflix I believe.

It is a 90's tv series right? Hmmm, yeah I know that the rating is great, people gave good reviews, but the thing about watching an old show is the picture's kinda awful, and not pleasing to watch. So unless it's a really awesome one, I dont watch old series. But I will consider it more about twin peaks. thanks dude. any other?

reply

Yeah it's a early 90s show but it was 10 years ahead of its time.
It was filmed on location a lot and was cinematic in a time other shows weren't.

Except some bad performances it holds up pretty well production-wise and the show itself (story, some characters, music, atmosphere) is awesome - as I said it's one of my favorites and I am not alone in praising this show till today.

And the new Blu-ray has great picture quality - the show was shot on 35mm film which has higher resolution than 1080p FullHD.

Ah and Michael J. Anderson is in it. Probably one of the reasons (along his small part in David Lynch's Mulholland Drive) why he was cast as Samson in Carnivale.

reply

So it's like that.
To be frankly, carnivale is the first time I've ever seen the guy who played Samson. So apparently he's quite well known.
thanks dude. appreciate it

I also recommend "Twin Peaks". It's one of the best shows.
It's out on Blu-ray.

Yeah some of the actors are bad but others give good performances and after a few episodes you should be sucked into the dark mystery world of TP.

reply

wow, two people now. Okay I will consider it. thanks dude.
any other series?

Honestly, I'm still looking for another show like Carnivale -- something fantastical and mysterious and ambiguous, with lavish, expensive production design, that doesn't come off as cheesy. I'd third the Twin Peaks recommendation, because it's the only other show I've seen that comes close (or, at times, matches) the feel of Carnivale.

I know that they're not exactly the same, but how about once upon a time? Never watched the show, but I read the imdb page, it's all about magic and fairytale. Is it good?
and is there any show like harry potter, but series. something involves that kind of magic?

reply

Seriously. It's been like 9 years since its cancellation, and I still don't believe it. So many terrible shows are on television at the moment. I'd give so many of them up, even ones I like, to have just one more season of this masterpiece of a show.

This series deserved more episodes and a good conclusion.

Leave me be.

Well said! I cant stand being left hanging like this.eww

Well I don't know wether you've gone ahead and tried Twin Peaks yet, but if you're going to there's no better time to do it than now with the announcement of a third season coming in 2016.

Daniel Knauf was a producer on NBC's Dracula. It was beautifully shot, gorgeous clothing, location and dialogue. But just couldn't catch on with a larger audience. I think Daniel is a very smart story teller and knows how to make a scene visually stunning. It is a shame it got canceled after the first season. I think it could of caught on. But like with everything with Daniel he creates very expensive shows with small cult audiences.

reply

I wanted to watch Dracula because Jonathan rhys meyer was in it, but before I got the chance to watch it, the show was cancelled.

I highly recommend 'American Gothic.'

Penny Dreadfull

I never saw this show but i do plan to eventually binge watch Deadwood, Carnivale, & Penny Dreadful. Everybody says i should watch Downtown Abby but I am very resistant for whatever reason.

I think Season 4 of American Horror - "Freak Show" - had a similar feel: a group of carnival freaks who were a tight "family" to each other, tho a Much darker series. It is streamable on Netflix.

I just engaged with AHS from last Hotel season. The first few episodes were kinda scary, but then it got more like fantasy than horror. Are the other seasons like that?

reply

Season 4 was a bland and very boring season of AHS though.

If I'm not mistaken, downtown abbey is a family drama right? Not a fantasy fiction.

True Blood.

But it doesn't beat Carnival.

reply

I watched the whole 7seasons of True Blood. I don't think the show is that great. The main character was kinda unlikable. The best thing about that show was Ryan Kwanten's often nudity. Lol
