Is it true that Jim Carrey was originally cast as the titled character?

While I thought Jim Carrey was great in "How The Grinch Stole Christmas" I felt Will Ferrell was much better off as the titled character.

it was supposed to be Chris Farley (as per the Netflix special- the movies that made us)

I highly doubt it. The movie was written and directed by Jon Favreau, and he and Will Farrell are good friends.

Favreau didn't write it.

he became the director attached to production, David Berenbaum wrote the story.
i am saying BEFORE all that, the producer and film company has someone in mind.. and it wan't Carrey

I doubt that too, especially when the subject matter is Hollywood related. It's all hype. It's always selling.

That would have felt too much like a Christmas themed version of Beverly Hills Ninja. Chris already made his fish out of water movie.
