Caruso's career

Do you think Caruso will ever star in another movie or TV-show? It's probably not very likely he'll star in a different show, but maybe a movie? Or is CSI: Miami the end of his career?

Hitler is also well known locally and overseas...

I liked him in NYPD Blue. He just got worse over the years. I've stopped watching the show a few seasons back. Glad to see it go.

reply

Hitler was not in NYPD Blue.

reply

Of course not ending. once the show/role is over he will just keep cashing in this pretty Irish face of his on and on.

Yeah, he did a Farrah Fawcett move, he left "NYPD Blue" after one season, same as Farrah did with "Charlie's Angels".

I remember it well and really didn't think we'd see much of him again after that bone-headed decision. Miami was either the luckiest break or... maybe it was his destiny to leave and re-surface like this, who knows?

As for the future, I can see him with a Leslie Nielsen-like career in comedies, spoofing himself as the straight man!

he was in First Blood movie - Rambo 1 incase any of you don't know. Of coz not as the main character.

reply

He was in Officer and A Gentleman. He was the one who got trapped in the Dilbert Dunker.

This will be the high point of my day; it's all downhill from here.

NYPD Blue wasn't as big the first few years, it wasn't even on in most cities.

NYPD Blue was a sensation from the beginning. It was offered to all markets. The thing I remember about the sensationalism was that, on a visit to Dallas (we're from New York,) the local station blacked out the first 10 minutes due to the content. I have to say i was very grateful that I lived in NY where, at least at that time, we were still allowed to make our own decisions as to what to watch. I'm perfectly capable of changing the station myself if I don't like what's on.

Pretty? Are you kidding me? Maybe 30 years ago but the older he got, the less attractive he got. Some people age well and some people don't. He's definitely in the "don't" category.

"Lord! It's a miracle! Man up and vanished like a fart in the wind!"

The reason he's on CSI Miami is because his movie career *beep* the bed. When he was playing John Kelly on NYPD Blue, he was quoted as saying he didn't think the show was going anywhere and he was leaving to do movies and Broadway crap.

I think he did one or two movies and that was the end of that. He's not a big screen actor, and he probably should have stayed on NYPD Blue because we saw where that went. The thing is, Horatio is basically the same character as John Kelly, yet NYPD Blue was a much better show. That's not to say that Miami is a bad show, there just aren't too many shows that compare to NYPD Blue.

That said, when CSI Miami gets canned (possibly at the end of the season) I don't expect to see much of him. That's like Jimmy Smits trying to come back to TV a few years back after disappearing for a while once his run as Bobby Simone was done on NYPD Blue.

reply

I know this is an older post but just a few comments. First of all, I think in one season of NYPD Blue John Kelly showed more depth than Horatio Caine did in 10 years.

Second, if memory serves, Steven Bochco and company offered Jimmy Smits the role of co-star - certainly the name wouldn't have been John Kelly. Smits turned it down and the next offer went to Caruso. They went back to Smits after Caruso quit.

If Caruso's smart, he'll do what Dennis Franz did after NYPD Blue and just retire without fanfare. I thought it was a classy move even if I didn't realize he'd retired for about 3 years! Anyway, I'm sure Caruso's made enough money to live comfortably for the rest of his life.

To be honest, I think I've only seen him on CSI: Miami. Which is why I almost never watched it.

If he wants to continue, acting classes are a must. He has got to be one of the worst I've ever seen. At least as mannered as Shatner as Kirk. Just thoroughly irritating to watch and listen to. I watched Las Vegas and NY with pleasure, but, in spite of a good supporting cast, he was a drag.

I suppose some liked him in the role. Fine. But as someone who has acted, albeit almost entirely non-professionally, he was an embarrassment.

reply

Thank you...you hit the nail on the head! He has to be one of the world's worst actors....OK not everyone can be Meryl Streep...but he is awful!

reply

OMG THANK YOU!!!

I saw him on one episode of CSI and the whole sunglasses thing was ok. When I watched other episodes and saw that it was a recurring theme, I thought maybe the show was a comedy (I'd only seen bits and pieces of it). When at last I saw a few full episodes, all I could think about was "Why in the WORLD would they cast someone with as little talent to play the lead?".

Seriously, the only other actor/actress who I consider to be just as bad is Neve Campbell! Her affected manner of speech and jerky little movements are the SAME in all the movies and TV shows she's ever made. Initially I thought it was her "character personality quirk" in Party of Five, but then when I saw The Craft and Scream and realized that's the only way she knew how to act.

Sad but true.

Although CSI:Miami can be a somewhat enjoyable show, I believe NYPD Blue is a superior show in every way. Yes, the advancement of forensic science and technology available since that time is very cool, but few can deny, with merit, that NYPD Blue was a one-of-a-kind, complex 'tapestry' - kind of like the "Breaking Bad" of its time (early 90's).

I agree with the previous poster,

First of all, I think in one season of NYPD Blue John Kelly showed more depth than Horatio Caine did in 10 years.
but will take it a step further:

IMO - Caruso as John Kelly showed more depth in a SINGLE episode (the pilot, and many others in that first season) than Horatio Caine did in 10 years!! His vulnerability (which is in reality, strength) and sheer range of emotions, are only the beginning. He actually responds to people and situations...not merely cocking his head to the side with/without a smirk and placing/re-placing his sunglasses onto his head. Yeesh! Little did he realize (what was obvious to the majority of the viewing public at that time, and those of us who have been aware of this nonsense since it happened), had he just stuck with this gem that was NYPD Blue, he would likely have achieved what he was after in the first place...as a minimum - recognition, respect, and the experiential immersion as an actor, that would have allowed his obvious potential (at that time) to truly bloom into a real star. Instead, he insisted on taking actions that indicate he presumed he was invincible, and instead ran into a huge boulder of kryptonite. Bummer.

p.s. - Dennis Franz and Bryan Cranston rule!

You know what, I hope he never has to work again due to royalties; hopefully he has good lawyers. I love Horatio. My fav CSI cause it was so *beep* funny and sci-fi like. If you have time, check out Charlie Brooker's assessment of CSI:Miami on "What You Have Been watching". Funny but still....CSIM was awesome. And yes, hope this cute Irish ginger stays around - he entertains me, that's what TV is supposed to do!

Just happened to see this:

Makes me think that 1. he's not planning to retire, and 2. he may have had an inkling that CSI Miami was going to be cancelled.

He should guest-star on an episode of Dexter

"He should guest-star on an episode of Dexter".

I've been thinking this too.

He'll always be Mitch to me.

Spot on, Franksiegl and Ilovedessert. He has to be one of the worst, if not THE worst actor in TV history. He has two expressions. In every medium shot he puts on his glasses and then his hands on his hips, holding that weird mix of bewilderment and pleading in his expression. A tree-stump could do better. According to industry gossip he's not a particularly pleasant individual.

reply

He's one of the worst actors in history and only made a name thanks to this show. Why on earth would anyone possibly cast him anything else, besides sexy looks and hot scenes such as what this show was?

reply

He made a name for himself on NYPD Blue.

David Caruso is one of the worst actors of all time.

I love procedurals but Caruso makes CSI: Miami hard to watch--his humorless self-importance is palpable. The writing doesn't help--it's just God-awful, but exactly what you might expect from a Bruckheimer production. For those of you who are "Friends" aficionados I offer a reference--a drinking game based on Caruso's "smell the fart" acting will get a roomful of people seriously buttfaced. You might have to drink an entire bottle of Tequila (or whatever) in a single episode. The original CSI is so much better as far as I can say--I've seen 3 seasons of the original and I'm just over 30 episodes of Miami. The other actors and the cases themselves keep me watching, but the dialogue is just plain painful. I can't fathom the possibility that any woman would ever be attracted to him (real life or character), but who can say? Axl Rose dated supermodels back in the day.

It's easy to hate David Caruso. And his performance in "CSI Miami" was pretty one-note. But he was in "Session 9" and he showed a little more acting range in that. The "Kiss of Death" re-make wasn't bad either.

The idea that actors should always stay on hit TV shows is questionable. Should Johnny Depp have stayed on "21 Jump Street"? Should George Clooney have stayed on "ER"?
