The old homeless man on the couch

We see the old man twice in the film.

Once, when Ryu pulls his trousers - which have slid down to his ankles - up and then the old man sits back on the couch.

Second, after Ryu has moved out of his former home, the old man is again seated in the couch with his pants down around his ankles. Then there is a closeup of the couch with flowers growing in the dirt lodged in the couch.

Can anyone explain to me the significance of the presence of the old man in the film? Is it that Ryu is simply being kind to him in the first scene and the second scene is shorthand to inform the viewer that Ryu no longer comes around as he has moved out?
