Paedophile?

surly Ryu lifting the girls skirt up was pervy/uncalled for?

I was disturbed by it....would he have sexually assulted her?

reply

[deleted]

It was when she was watching TV and he comes in...they r messing around, and he lifts her skirt up and is 'being inappropriate' with her...

this is seconds before she gives him the letter from his sister.....when she kills herslf

reply

So now adults can't touch children or play with them without being pedophiles. See, even me saying that sounds wrong. What the *beep* kind of society do we live in?

"Castration!!! Double Castration!!!"

reply

he lifted up her skirt.....

if a kidnapper of a (how old was she? 6?7?) young child under the age of 10 lifts up her skirt to have a peek....that to me, is paedophilic

u wont want a stranger to lift your daughters skirt up and have a look would u? i know i wont want someone doing that to my 8 yr old.

reply

First off, i thought it's spelled pedophile?
Second, I do not believe the skirt lifting incident was meant to be sexual at all. While obviously inappropriate, skirt lifting is not seen as that big a big deal in Asian culture as compared with in Western culture. It's kinda like a kid thing to play around and tease each other. And in this case, it's simply an adult teasing a young girl.

And while I'm speaking in all honesty, I'm still ready to get flamed for what I just said...

reply

um....no.... the correct spelling is as listed for the post!

reply

Its kind of sad that this scene was read that way when it is totally obvious it was not sexual in the slightest. See Chris Morris' Brass Eye paedophilia special for a clever example of how the media has helped increase this kind of hysteria although it will surely also cause offence.

reply

Actually, Brits tend to spell it "paedophile", and Americans "pedophile"...

reply

How do Americans spell Paediatric?

"Never eat yellow snow"

reply

I am feaking amazed that the scene has been so mis-interpreted and just been marginilised into a narrow American way of thinking. For godsake, stop tring to demonize everything. He was simply teasing her in a playful manner and nothing more.

Ditto!

But what can you expect when they BANNED a masterpiece like "The Tin Drum" (Winner of the The Golden Palm and the Oscar for Best Foreign Picture) because in the opinion of some ultra-conservative religious fanatics from Oklahoma, it contains pedophile images!
Actually at some point it was a crime to rent, buy and of course to see that movie!

Luckyly the supreme court of the US lifted the ban and now the normal people can enjoy Volker Schlöndorff's masterpiece.

P.S: My sincere apologies to all the intelligent US citizens who are not puritanical wackos, or something worse. I really hope u r the majority.

reply

Oh yes, an American Way of thinking indeed

First off you cannot make an assumption on a whole group because one person misinterpreted a scene. Second, I love it how you just assume it can only be an American, you just disregard any other person huh?

Amazing, isn't it? I was hoping I wouldn't come across anyone who acted like this.

[deleted]

it is a sad state of affairs. while it's good that people are more on guard against pedophiles than they were thirty, forty years ago, North American society at least has created a sort of hysteria over it.

most days i walk past this playground that's near where i live and sometimes i pause to watch the children play because it's nice and makes me think of my own childhood. but i always remember to get moving because it wouldn't take very long for someone to see me and think i'm some sort of pervert planning to abduct a kid or something.

this is a real danger and i can't blame parents for being protective but it still does make me a little sad.

reply

I find it interesting that in your post you marginalize cultural differences. It seems your way of thinking is quite narrow as well.

Oh man, this is my favorite post. Love the part about "marginilised into a narrow American way of thinking", just as the preceding posts finished discussing how Americans vs. the rest of the world spell "pedophile".

Yep, after reading suganspice70's comments myself, I can't help but to think she's a victim of molestation. God I pray she gets help & stops annoying us with irrelevent concerns with a character in a movie. What a dingbat. My take on the scene was a bit uncomfortable @ first, I thought he might've been liking that girl a little to much, but then I just saw it as teasing & playfulness. Like so many said around here, it's like how brothers tend to tease their little sisters, giving them a hard time but only out of playfulness & fun.

reply

This thread is two years old, but honestly, how is it that this woman didn't see that Ryu was acting like a child because he was gonna be able to save his sister?. He was just over the moon, not a pedophile. He was just acting like a little boy teasing a girl.

reply

[deleted]

I think it was just to piss off the little girl in a friendly kind of way. Myself, I felt unconfortable when I saw it but like you say it's maybe because of the Asian Culture difference.

It was no big deal, don't be so uptight.

reply

everyone here should stop pretending that they know anything about korean culture. that scene has nothing to do with cultural gaps...

whether or not it is pedo is up to you, but the obvious intent of the whole tv/cartoon scene is to portray ryu and the kidnapped girl's close, almost brother/sister like relationship with one another.

it's so blatantly obvious from previous scenes also...

the first scene we see the little girl and ryu she refers to him as "oppa" which is a very informal way of referring to someone who is male... and older than you(and if you're a girl).

.. i mean come on they act like siblings/family through out the whole movie.

anyway, that's how it is

reply

I love that film.

Last film seen: Kwaidan 9/10

reply

I saw so much nothing inappropriate in that scene that I thought it was nice they could bond in such a way. I remember when my kids were little and they'd sit on my like I was furniture and I missed it a little bit.

reply

I can see why you think that, but i think thats such a stereotypical answer. Thats like looking at the cold hard facts and making an assumption. Ohh!!! she was kidnapped. Kidnappers are bad people. If he touches her and lifts her skirt, that means hes a pedophile!!! Thats obviously not the case.

Im not saying there are no pedophiles in Korea, i guess there are in every society, but korean culture is less uptight about that kinda stuff for one reason or another. Opposed to the US, i dont think koreans would react to that scene as, "Hes a pedophile!"

reply

I accept that....i felt uneasy however when he was playing with her.

If you rewatch that scene she didnt seem to happy when he did that.....and there was some sexual domination there....even if he wasnt a pedophile...i am sure had he kept her captive for longer, he might cross that line...

jus my take...

reply

it's sad that you thought that. because you're not seeing that scene for what it was really about.

ryu was very happy at that point... he had just gotten the money, he was going to be able to save his sister. he realized that it was because of yooksun, so he gives her a kiss and teases her a little, until she comes and sits on his stomach... i just saw it as nice, cute affection, they were acting like brother and sister...

it was a running theme throughout the "kidnapping", that they were all very caring for yooksun...

and yes, our society is screwed up, a person who just likes playing with kids can't do it for fear of being lableled pedophile... when i have kids, i might think differently, and really, that's pretty sad too...

reply

there is playing and then there is lifting up skirts of little girls, making them uncomfortable.....I admit they were good to yooksun aside that scene....but there is showing affection and then there is....showing TOO much.

Maybe if u have children u will know how uncomfortable it will make u to see a grown up lift up your daughter's skirt to have a look

i think most pedophiles will make that claim

I was only teasing
I was only looking, nothign more
I was only loving

....its a steep and nasty road

reply

Oh please. If you knew anything about east-asian culture you'd realise it was just teasing.
East-asian cultures often have a more extreme sense of humor. People are often made fun of, teased in inappropriate ways or or even hurt. I mean have you ever seen a Japanese gameshow for example? (look up those Silent Library videos on Youtube for example)
In any case there is often some form of humiliation involved.

Did you ever notice that people who believe in creationism look really un-evolved? - Bill Hicks

reply

Are u saying humiliation is ok...coz it happens all the time, who cares right? how about the kids who are sexually humiliated? is that ok too....coz its just playing right? let people get away with it coz....its the way of the east...who cares how many lives are ruined, how many kids are sexually pestered or fiddled with....(gimme a break!)

I am sure East Asia and Asia in general are ripe with pedophiles who hide behind these 'humiliations'...'it was just for fun' statements all the time and get away with hurting so many children, ruining countless lives....and no1 does anything about it.

I am not saying the guy in this film is one of these men...i am just saying that his way of teasing her was inappropriate and had she not have died/had this been real life...there is a realistic chance his 'affections' could have led him to cross the boundaries of 'playful' and he might well have sexually molested her

reply

Geez I'm not even going to attempt to argue with you anymore since you are apparently so incredibly brainwashed by the paranoid and xenophobic ideas of western society that you cannot accept that other cultures have different moral codes and can function perfectly fine that way.

Besides which IT'S A MOVIE. It's not real. There's a difference.

Did you ever notice that people who believe in creationism look really un-evolved? - Bill Hicks

reply

In real life....had this situation happened, either he will be on the sex offenders register or he would have somehow tried to do something to Sun...which infact is very sad

you say I am 'incredibly brainwashed by the paranoid and xenophobic ideas of western society '....well you are very naive and narrow minded to the harm teasing/molestation/pestering of children can do...regardless of where they are from.

If u cant see how pedophiles ruin lives.....and u r welcoming to it coz 'its an eastern thing'...then u r someone lacking basic human decency

reply

In real life had this happened he would have been arrested for Kidnapping not sexual molestation SINCE HE DIDN'T MOLEST HER NOR DID HE INTEND TO! Try to get that through your thick skull.

reply

So, did you actually like this movie? I guess what I am wondering is why you thought that particular 3 second moment in the film was so disturbing? There were a lot more disturbing parts, like the fat Korean guy *beep* a corpse. Did that not bother you? There was nothing in this film to suggest that Ryu was a pedophile. They were both teasing each other. It wasn't like he lifted her skirt slowly, while giving her seductive looks. As I said, it was like a 3 second moment and nothing like that ever happened again. Are you that sensitive? If so, I am thinking Chan-wook Park films aren't for you.

reply

I did like the film, infact I am a big fan of the triology - Lady Vengence being my fav- it was a great film....

however that scene disturbed me a lot because I have three daughters, and as a mother, i will not be pleased in the slightest if a man lifted up their skirts....even if it was 'just teasing'

reply

This is an old topic but I need to reply because this is how I look at it so as not to be disturbed... (though I was not that disturbed in the first place, some people are.)

At first it was a little wierd. Me and my friends made the whole "he's a pedophile" joke about it... but--

The way I look at it is he was really happy, like a kid finally getting a toy or something that he wanted, and it was because of her. So he was "teasing" her as a brother might tease a sister, or the way one kid might tease another kid in the terms of--

(this is my main point... remember this?)

"I see London, I see France... I can see your underpants!"

It embarrases the person in a kind of uncomfortable way, but you don't think of a kid as being a perv for saying something like that. And, at that moment, I think he felt happy like a little kid, not like an adult with a child.

Now, why the director threw in the "I see London, etc." tease, I am not so sure. I think it has something to do with how she's already been hanging around with them in only her underwear and he didn't give a second thought, so it was just a joking thing. But that's how I think of it so as not to be put off by the movie.

___

All I can remember now is the agony of holding on and the wonderful feeling of letting go.

reply

I thought he was *beep* a woman who was anaesthetised, not a corpse. If they killed the people they took organs from, why was the main character still alive?

reply

To the OP: My parents are from Kerala. Have you spent any length of time in India to have a chance to observe the local culture from close quarters? I'm asking this because if you had, you would have noticed that this sort of playful teasing isn't really construed as deviant in our culture.

Being Indian, I have personally seen several grown adults tease children in the exact same playful manner that Ryu was doing with the girl in this film (lifting of the skirt). None of those adults would be considered sexual deviants or paedophiles, because of that. They were all well liked in society and were popular individuals with spotless moral character. Persons with whom, parents would have no qualms about leaving their children.

I think you are being unduly paranoid here. Accusing Nephilim-6 of supporting paedophilia simply because he did not agree with your impression of a character in a film, is just asinine.

reply

I just saw the movie and I remember at that part I was a little ehh...worried, but then when she sat on him and he crossed his legs and rocked her, I took it as they were playing and she was fine. After that I thought about the skirt lifting and realized it sort of looked more like a slip of the hand as he was reaching for her and he happened to graze her skirt, lifting it a little. I'll have to go back and watch that scene again to be sure, but I'm pretty sure there was nothing sexual there.

Edit: Ok, well I just watched it again, and it wasnt a slip, but still not sexual.

reply

Honestly, do you even think before you write? There was NOTHING AT ALL sexual about the scene. If you can't see that, you must be deaf, blind and I don't know what else. Your reasoning seems to be "I have children, thus its rational for me to misinterpret everything and anything as paedophilia". That doesn't make any sense.

Cheaply bought civil obedience

reply

I think suga is sensitive to this topic because she was a victim of rape/child molestation. That or she's just ultra sensitive mixed with stupid. I felt uncomfortable watching this scene too, and I had the same idea at first. But then I thought about it. And after I saw him have sex with his girlfriend I threw out the idea totally. I never would have fought for the idea like you have here. Going as far to say that if he only would have staid with her longer he would have (blank)and (blanked).

reply

I particularly remember how Chaplinesque that scene looked and felt. Very light-hearted, sweet. SHK is a very physical actor and his body language tells the whole story here. He's not being sly with her, he's teasing. He is happy that he has the money, and thankful to the little girl for being the reason he got the money.

If you take away the skirt part, and watch HER reaction to him, there is no discomfort on her part when she plops herself onto him to watch - like she had done that a bunch of times before.

He just keeps swinging his legs and rocks her while she rests her hands on his knees. He isn't getting off. He's just lying back in his own world thinking about the money.

The character may have been all kinds of angry and vengeful, but when he was with the little girl, he was gentle.

reply

You know. After watching that scene, I thought to myself, "I wonder how many people on IMDB are going to take that scene WAY out of proportion." And now I know. lol.

Also,I love it when people reply "well, how do you know he didn't INTEND to molest the girl?"

It's A MOVIE. He's A CHARACTER. If he meant to molest the girl...I have a pretty good idea that the WRITER or DIRECTOR would have let the AUDIENCE know. I can't even believe I just wasted time explaining that.

Sugar and Cornflakes,

reply

He was clearly messing around with her, much like a brother would. He was just doing it as an act of endearment.
Ryu was not a child molester.

reply

thanks kgtn10....seems you seem to understand where I am coming from here and I see your reasoning.

I guess I am disturbed by a grown man playing 'I see London' game with a kid....coz i am immediatly relating it back to my kids. However, although it doesnt make me feel comfy if my childrens uncle was playing it with them....i do get that Ryu's intentions may not be sexual molestation.

As for Initetchi.....I am from Kerala and i dont approve with most of what goes on there....i know of many kids who are victims of the most appualing abuse who are not listened to or bothered with....so going by that, i condone Ryu...or anyone, who teases children, coz unlike Ryu...their intentions may not be so admirable and they hide behind 'teasing', 'playing', 'touching'

reply

Think of it in the way that people at school would "snap" a girls bra strap, where you pull it and it pings against them.

"I like my coffee black, just like my metal."

reply

I agree that it is just like that: snapping a bra strap. However, I also think snapping bra straps is a form of sexual harassment. NOT sexual abuse or sexual molestation, but sexual harassment. This is, similarly, a subtle "teasing" form of male domination over females. Not for sexual gratification, but as an unconscious expression of a male power to dominate females. JMO anyway.

reply

[deleted]

Nothing in this darkly comic movie was intended to be 'appropriate', because life isn't. I wouldn't be the least bit surprised if Ryu had these thoughts... But Park intentionally wanted to give room for interpretation, guessing confusion. :) Just because the comic aspects weren't visually pronounced doesn't mean they weren't there: it just required a little more from the viewer to notice the jokes.

reply

I don't think there was anything in this film to imply that the character Ryu had any remotely paedophilic propensities, whatsoever. If you are predisposed to politically correct hyper-sensitivity then this may be the first indication to your lack of a soul.

reply

I agree, there was NOTHING sexual about that, it was just messing around, a split second, when you play around, you just do the first thing that comes to your mind to teaste or annoy or play with them, it's definetly not the way I would play, but this was OBVIOUSLY just playing around NOTHING sexual.

I'm not trying to be rude or anything, but I wonder if anything happened to you while you grew up, something bad sexually? this could have the effect of the way you think about this issue. Or maybe nothing bad, maybe you never had brothers or something?

Because most people would see that as nothing much.

BUT it all depends on WHO did it, and what was their true intention, this is something you would never know from merly a 1 second thing.

Rewatching the scene it really isn't as severe as is being implied...if she was on a bed and he was lifting her skirt in a manner that it seemed he was trying to "get a look" or something I could understand, but the impression I got is that he was grabbing for her while playing and happened to get a hold of her skirt and so that's what he grabbed. To be honest, I never even thought about or considered it until you specifically mentioned it so it couldn't have been that outright.

I was shocked that I missed this so I watched the film again the other day. You mean the split second he barely lifts her skirt to tease her? Are you JOKING?! He's just playing- surely (Yes, that's surely spelled with an 'e') that's legal!

reply

Just got my copy of this movie on DVD (along with the Tartan edition of Lady Vengeance, thankfully since I heard the company is going bust it's likely a limited chance to get now), the director describes the scene as something he really liked, he describes the action as "fatherly love" which is pretty much as I saw it, especially after the part where she sits on his lap, very natural. So yeah, as according to the director there was no intent of anything sexual there.
