Did anyone else just burst out laughing at the twist?
It was so ridiculous I just started laughing at how ridiculous it was. I don't understand how people can say this is a good film.

shareNo. It was terrific. The only problem was that the movie started lagging just before the revelation (although I knew who the killer was pretty early on).... as it seemed absurd what was going on, and I actually did find it ludicrous...until the twist redeemed it.
Great cast and beautifully made, but just short of a classic. Because of that slight lull.
I honestly could not figure out what was happening, which is uunual for me.

"Why do people always laugh in the wrong places?"
--Shelley Winters
I liked the twist of this movie actually, and the movie in general. Thus far, this is only movie to feature the Multiple Personality Disorder twist that I genuinely like a good deal.
shareNo, I didn't burst into laughter, it wasn't a ridiculous twist and yes I'm sorry for your deformed expectations.
shareNo laughter did not come to mind because I was so *beep* angry that I wasted this time sitting excited about this plot and they give this peace of *beep* for an ending.
shareI started laughing uncontrollably because that last line was funny as hell, plus the tone of voice made it even more hilarious! Not because it was ridiculous. Although it is a little cliché...but that's part of what makes it so funny :-)
shareYes. It was a good movie but the ending ruined it.
shareI don't understand how people can say the film was good until the twist spoiled it. The entire film was building up on this premise, without the twist everything else that happened was nonsense. People are making it out like the twist didn't make any sense and was thrown in at the last minute but the film wouldn't make any sense without it.
If you think it was a typical "it was all a dream" ending that came out of nowhere, then you really didn't understand the film and/or weren't paying attention.

I figured out that the killer was the kid just when his mother died!! :P
***Use the Force!!!!***
Spoilers ahead!
I know, the "it was all a dream" trick has just been made too many times. Anyway, as I was expecting this movie to be just a easy horror flick, I didn't mind. And, the twist is presented in a way subtle enough to let the movie stand as a clever work. The very last scene, though we know it was only in his mind, was anyway quite disturbing!
And, by the way, if it had been such a bad picter, I wouldn't have come to IMDb to know more about it :)

Did you see the twist coming? Sometimes our selfasteam is hurt when we´re fooled by movies, you know...it was a very fresh twist. What followed was not.
After we´ve seen the whole movie and actually have had single shots of Liottas character searching for the killer, finding the keys, three murders he impossibly could´ve committed.Guess it´s cause Malcolms mind was the mind of a childs and thought simple...just cause Rhodes was a killer,we´re supposed to believe he was THE killer? And the ending with the kid being the killer....THAT part was just over the top.Maybe that´s the twist you mean...the fact that the story got weirder and more supernatural without giving us any explanation,I liked that...
If the twist is that the people at the motel was the killers 10 identitys,it was great. I mean,I can´t care about people who don´t exist but that´s revealed late.I was fooled, although I should´ve seen it coming.
I didn't laugh at the final twist, but I didn't really like it nevertheless.
It was very forced and unbelievable for a kid to kill all those people.
Sure, it just was the guy's mind, but still.

I am very surprised to see all you people saying this movie is crap and its twist is ridiculous. This movie was released on 2003 and at that time this story was very new and also it was a very good thriller and suspense movie.but now since lots movie with such theme has been released and since all of you watched it now you are finding it ridiculous and crap.I am comparing you guys with the people who watched psycho which was release on sixty's now and saying it too be funny.but think when that movie was released on sixty's at that time people were horrified while they watched psycho and also some people were afraid to go for taking shower also.but even though, now a days if some morons will say psycho as crap it won't affect its cult status as it is the greatest thriller, horror movie of all time.so telling this movie as crap is also same thing.
sharei agree, this movie was awesome. people like to go on about how the twist is cliche, but so far they haven't mentioned one example of a twist like that in another movie. but i did kindof predict that it would be the kid. i mean after all, he just walked into the room with his mom, and then after he comes out she's dead. pretty obvious.
shareI enjoyed the movie a lot. I'm sure some people will find fault with it, but it was creepy and entertaining and good enough for me to buy on DVD.
sharetypical imdb crowd to hate on a great film...
I thought it was a really compelling movie with dark feel and a lot of whodunnit suspense ... that is until the twist was revealed. WTF??? They must be joking! I just couldn't stop shaking my head at what a lame "explanation" that was. It's the worst kind of spoiler because it renders the movie from that point on unwatchable, makes discussion an act of futility ("well, he made it all up in his head"), and repeat viewings pointless. What good is a movie that you can't watch again?
Or is it just the horror of seeing Amanda Peet and John Cusack on the same screen again since that awful Roland Emmerich flick?
No, people are saying the movie is crap... because it is crap.
The people defending the movie like the idea that the twist makes it smarter when it actually makes no sense what so ever.
First, let's start with issue #1 - It's all in his head.
Okay, you want to say 10 random strangers are all different personalities? Fine. But they weren't just random! 2 of them were escaped convicts that ran together. We had the father, mother and child as a family and the 2 newly weds together. When do split personalities make any sense like that?
Also what happened to Timmy's real father? The "dad" said his real father left a long time ago. At that point does that make sense to anyone if they are all split personalities? How about the part where duval tells her husband she faked pregnancy because her friend told her she saw him with another woman. How does that make any sense if they are just split personalities of the same person?!?
Second, the entire premise makes no sense. They tell us that out of the 10 personalities only one of them "should be guilty" and the rest are supposed to be decent ones... Except that the 2 convicts clearly are murderers...
And if the boy killed everyone what's the with the body in the freezer?
And he didn't even kill everyone, larry was killed by fake cop and he was killed by Ed.
Third, the idiots who try to defend this movie appearnatly didn't notice stuff in it. For example one person here says that it should be obvious they threw hints like their birthdays, except the birthdays are only exposed about 30 seconds before the twist is exposed... So how the heck is that a "hint" we should think about? Or the fact that their names are states... Again, it's at the same time. Another one mentioned how the bodies disappeared to show that it wasn't real and all in his mind... But the bodies did not disapear until (again) right before the twist was revealed. They stayed there forever, heck Ed even goes around and looks for a camera half way through the movie to take pictures of the dead bodies (which he does).
So NO, quite honestly it does seem to look as if this whole thing was thrown at the last second.
Fourth, as for the exposure of the timmy as the killer... what a joke.
Again, I'd ask the people who defend this idiocy to watch the movie closely. We see timmy lying down and his father holding the mother. Then Ed closes the door to the room and leaves. He closed the door on them... THEN we see other people and the actress getting killed... Ed finds her, calls the fake cop and then they all gather in the room to talk about... So when did Timmy who was asleep at the time kill the actress? Even if you're going to say he was faking, surely he couldn't have done that without anyone noticiting him.
Second murder, the young couple fight, the girl goes to their room, the husband follows then Paris follows. She goes back, again, in the room we are only left with Timmy and his dad (we see them). Is the dad just letting him walk out without saying a word? Does he not notice him gone? By the time Ed packs them up they are all together again.
The flashbacks in the end clearly show that Timmy had to go and physically do everything he did (though being not real, he had no issues with strength) but again, at those points of the movie he was not alone and it made no darn sense!
Gee... I wonder why the flashbacks didn't show that...
Only him with the knife because it made no freaking sense.
Sorry, but this movie is a joke and quite frankly, I would not be surprised if the "twist" (any of them) were only added at the last second.
''No, people are saying the movie is crap... because it is crap.''
No, people saying the movie is crap... think it's crap. Their opinions aren't factual though. None are.
''The people defending the movie like the idea that the twist makes it smarter when it actually makes no sense what so ever.''
Silly generalization.
I'm the grim reaper, lardass, and you're my next customer.
SPOILER AHEAD:
We were given the hint that the kid would be the killer during the first five minutes of the movie ~~ when we hear the defense attorney and the doctor talking to the judge and explaining that the convict that they were waiting for had been abused and neglected AND LEFT ALONE IN MOTEL ROOMS by his prostitute mother when he was just a child. That was when Malcolm's Identity Disorder began and his psyche split into a variety of personalities. So once we knew that we were dealing with one person with a number of personalities, it makes sense that the remaining "killer" would be the child ~~ reverting back to the time when the split first occurred.
