Monte is obviously tied in with the Russian mob... Wouldn't it make sense that Nikolai would have his back in prison? I love this film but the skinny pretty white boy getting his teeth knocked out doesn't make sense. The Russian mob would protect him.

sharePrisons are majority black / latino. I would presume the crips or bloods are more relevant there. The Russian mobs won't have much force in jail.
As I said in another thread - see American History X (coincidentally with Norton too). The main character belongs to a white supremacist group. When he goes to jail, he becomes a helpless minority, surrounded by black and brown people.
