Only 38 or so years old, has no job, no pension, can never work in the police force again, quit college only a year in, ex wife wants nothing to do with him, can't pay child support, kids seems to like him less and less, break up with the other police lady seems imminent.
Some kind of hint at an optimistic close for him would be nice if there was a chance.
I think there should have been a spin-off called McNulty P.I. and he would have been a private investigator in Baltimore/DC. The only problem is that McNulty is unlikeable so people would get sick of watching him after a while. He doesn't really cooperate with his peers and doesn't follow orders or procedures. He would have to be self-employed.

Truthbetold, I stopped caring for him during Season 5. His character development in Seasons 3 and 4 was flushed down the toilet. What he did in Season 5 was horrible.
He also had the option to stay in a minimal capacity and chose to leave without pension. So, its on him.
So, I don’t care much.
the problem was in season 4 he was hardly seen at all because the actor Domenic West was busy with other things so they had to write him down.
I don't know why people found him unlikeable for some reason I always cheered him on, at least with his police work anyway.
because he was smart always was right was good police. but the BS broken system would always get in the way of him. just have a look at the things he had solved before anyone else but they would all screw it up.
Wallace he brought in, D in season 2 death no one gave a crap.. all other cared about was the stats and not opening new cases. where his obsession. was to complete things correctly to win it. and had the balls not to be a suck up and go to any length to solve them
I retired from law enforcement a few years ago and never watched The Wire when it came out. I didn't want to watch a "Cop show" I finally watched and was absolutely blown away at the accuracy the writers were able to bring to the screen with the characters, rank and file, politics, back stabbing etc...
While watching the show, I realized that I was many of the characters going through the ranks and worked with many others. In fact, I was or worked with every character on that show including the politicians.
I worked with a "McNulty" for several years. We always said that if he ever fell into a bucket of shit, he would come out sucking a titty. It was just uncanny how cases would just fall in his lap. He always overthought things to the point that it was annoying. When a case, interview, search etc... was done, he would always want/need to do something more and most of the time, he was right. Example : Search warrants are nothing like the movies. Based on the fluid investigation, a warrant can take HOURS to complete and then you have to find a judge or magistrate to sign off. Our "McNaulty" would always volunteer to write a warrant and EVERYONE was happy to let him but would then get pissed at how long it took him.
Our "McNaulty" never wanted to advance in ranks so he stayed in homicide and he got burnt out while others would say bored. He ended up leaving and going to work doing cyber security for a private company making good money.
i finished watching the series again for the 3rd time. and one thing that caught my eye is how Loyal Bunk was to Jimmy in season 5 he never ratted him out at the end at all. he knew it was wrong what he was doing just let him do his thing even though he was pissed and huge respect to him. it actually made me not like Gregs at the end there Bunk was better to balance out what was right by remaining Loyal to his collogues and remain ethical.
