Why does the government not help a butthole of a city like Detroit?

I know, Uhmerica hates communism and all but how can such a high developed country let the people rot in this *beep*

reply

Same reason South Central L.A. was and is a difficult place to live: no one gives a *bleep* about poor people, especially ones with mental and/or drug issues. Only when tensions start getting really hot will people stand up and notice.

Horse crap. Fifty years of Democrat governance "helping poor people" and look at Detroit today. The best way to help poor people is to get out of the way so business can thrive and people can work their way out of poverty. Hand-outs never ever work.

Simple: Liberal run city.

I don't love her.. She kicked me in the face!!

ask obama since he claims he cleaned the city up! haha

What government? The state of Michigan or the Federal government? Both entities funneled loads of money into Detriot for nearly 80 years. Where do you think American cars used to be made? What incentive does the American taxpayer have now to dump more money into Detroit and how do you suppose this should be done? Should they drop bags of money from airplanes? Are we supposed to bail out every city that cannot sustain itself? The city had it's time. It's over.

Look at your phrase "let the people rot". It implies that people (or at least poor people in Detroit) are plants that just need a benefactor to water them and make sure the sun shines on them, and they'll flourish.

But people aren't plants. They are animals. Animals whose brains are their means of survival. If that brain isn't forced to work (observe, think, make decisions, act on their decisions, and sometimes learn from their failures) then it atrophies and becomes useless.

That's why the people of Detroit are up sh_t creek without a paddle. They've been treated like plants since the 1960's.

Government has run out of gas.

It's that man again!!

reply

because that is not how governments or economies work. thats how you build up public debt and *beep* up economies. bailouts never work. they only screw ship up more. giving the the poor like you want them to would cause the economy to go tits up

the value of money depends on how much money is in circulation. the more money the less value

Question: Why is Detroit still broke after 20 years?

https://www.quora.com/Why-is-Detroit-still-broke-after-20-years/answer/Jon-Mixon-1

No major businesses have moved into the city for nearly 30 years - Think about that: A major American hasn’t had a major employer move in almost three decades s. That means that the city has been depending upon the relatively few remaining businesses and the occasional opening of small businesses, which affects the tax base of the city.

Massive legacy costs - Detroit, like most major American cities, made deals in the 1960s and 1970s which traded higher wages for pensions and lifetime health care benefit packages. While that seemed like a good deal at the time, no one expected people to live for decades longer than they used to; and the people who made the deals knew that they would be retired or deceased when things got bad. Detroit is now facing “bad”, and it doesn’t have the money to pay for it.

Taxpayer flight/attrition - The people who were paying property taxes are leaving or dying. They aren’t being replaced, and the city is trying to cope with the lost revenue.

Increased operating costs - It’s not as if it’s cheaper to run a major city now than it was 20 years ago. In fact, Detroit’s infrastructure is in shambles, and the city requires billions of dollars in investment to allow it to remain inhabitable over the next few decades. There’s no clear path toward obtaining that money as the state of Michigan and the federal government have already dumped BILLIONS into Detroit, with limited to no success from their efforts.

Mediocre leadership - While people like former Mayor and NBA great Dave Bing have tried to right the situation in the city, they are outliers. Basically the people of Detroit keep re-electing the same people whose mediocre leadership abilities allowed the situation to deteriorate in the first place.
